Dissociative Identity Disorder also known as “multiple personality disorder” is part of a group called dissociative disorders. “Dissociative disorders is a disorder that includes a dissociative symptom (i.e., a disruption in the usually integrated functions of consciousness, memory, identity, or perception of the environment).” (Psych Central, 2014) Dissociative identity disorder is the presence of two or more personalities. Especially if one is experiencing severe depression. For example, “Billy wasn’t quite the boy next door. He tried twice to commit suicide while he was awaiting trial, so his lawyers requested a psychiatric evaluation.” (Ninth ed., p. 202) In this case, Billy had a total of fourteen personalities and each had different names and age. Billy had a brutal childhood which made him create different personalities. Therefore he was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. Billy had severe depression which caused him to commit suicide twice. The goal for this treatment would be to have all personalities become one all together. However, with this treatment there is an obstacle. Some patients become terrorized with the idea that the therapist may kill an identity or someone that is very important to them. They will need to understand that the therapist is not killing them, they’re just uniting this alter to one person. If and only this has worked, the patient will then be conscious of the present and the past. They will be aware of the different emotions that can be happening all at
