Choices are your whole life. But in Divergent, only one is important. And that one choice can transform you. “It decides your friends, defines your beliefs and determines your loyalties-Forever.” Now that Tris is Dauntless, she doesn’t know what kind of choices she will have to make because she is Divergent. When one faction turns against the rest, change, insecurity and danger will determine your fate.
“One choice can transform you.” But in this case one evil lady can transform a faction. The factions have changed ever since Jeanine wanted to take over the abnegation government. “We’ve all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own. I don’t want to do that. I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest.”(Page 405) Tobias wants every faction to simply accept each other, but Erudite is making that wish impossible. He just wants Peace between the factions. The training of Dauntless was changed to make them look more vicious and want to fight. “Six years ago, Max changed the training Methods to make them more brutal, said it was supposed to test peoples strength. And that changed Dauntless as a whole. They trained him to look vicious too.”(Page 240) By making them look vicious, it made them look fearless. That is why Jeanine is using dauntless to fight in the war, for Erudite. When Al died, Eric said it was brave because he committed suicide by jumped off the Chasm. But Tris’ mom’s death was brave. “It isn’t brave that she did it for me, it is brave because she did it without announcing it, without hesitation, and without appearing to consider another option.”(Page 451) This shows that Tris’ mom was once Dauntless and Dauntless don’t always have to be vicious to be brave. In this book, even if you change factions, your old faction will always stay with you and will still be a part of you, no matter how hard you try to forget.
