One of the things that sets Dauntless members apart from other faction members would not only be the large amount of black they wear, but the tattoos they get. Most members have tattoos, and almost of them have meaning. While still initiates, Tris and a few of her friends decide to get tattoos one night. Tris decides on getting three ravens which hold a special meaning to her; “I touch my collarbone, marking the path of their flight-toward my heart. One for each member of the family I left behind.” (90). Later on, we see that Four, Tris’ instructor and later boyfriend, has all of the faction symbols tattooed down his back. He says he does not want to be just one thing, he got all of the symbols because “I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind and honest. (405). Getting a tattoo like this is risky considering showing any sign of another faction could seem like an act of betrayal to the Dauntless, his current faction. We also see later on that Tris gets the Dauntless symbol tattooed on one shoulder blade, and the Abnegation symbol on her other shoulder blade. She realizes that she is more than just brave like the Dauntless, but she is also selfless like the Abnegation. She got the symbol because it “is a part of my identity, and it felt important that I wear it on my skin.”
