Divergent By Veronica Roth Essay

In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, she portrays a good message with adventure and some romance. She expresses that everyone is different and you don’t have to be afraid to be yourself. Beatrice Prior and Tobias Eaton, also known as Four, learn that through a series of events.
Beatrice and her mother were getting ready for the stimulation test to see what faction Beatrice belongs in. They were in their plain old house right before the stimulation tests were going to occur. Her mother cut her hair in an Abnegation hairstyle. They aren't allowed to look mirrors because they think it's considered an act of selfishness. Beatrice never thought she fit into the Abnegation way of life because she always felt a little selfish. The author creates a serious mood making you feel how Beatrice is feeling about the stimulation. She was nervous and didn’t know what to expect so she felt a little fear as well.
Beatrice Prior, the protagonist who is also known as Tris, is a teenager just trying to find her purpose in life and where she fits in. In this world the people
are scared of different things and want everyone to only have characteristics of one faction. Beatrice messes the system up because of her difference. She portrays not only characteristics of one faction but she shows them all. She is brave and curious which can get her into trouble sometimes. She isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes in and people around her fear her for that. She is strong no matter what she goes through and that is something I admire her for.
Tobias Eaton, most know him as Four, is a secretive character. He is Beatrice’s boyfriend and also her trainer. He has a hard time opening up to others in fear of them discovering his secret of being divergent. Everyone is scared of the word divergent so he and Tris have to hide it.
Caleb Prior is Tris’s older brother. They aren’t very far apart in age but Caleb still is protective over her like a big brother is. He is smart and always curious about everything so he chooses Erudite at the Choosing Ceremony. However, when he figures out the Erudite plans he doesn’t agree with them and leaves the faction to become factionless. He is like Tris in this sense and doesn’t give up on what he believes in.
The antagonist in this story is the Erudite leaders, or the biggest one is Jeanine.
The Erudite want to control everyone and get angry when they don’t get their way. Divergent people get in the way of their plan because they think differently and aren’t easily controlled. Jeanine tries everything she can to gain control of the divergent.
When Tris goes under the stimulation to try to figure out her faction she belongs to, she shows the characteristics of not one but three factions. Her trainer, Tori, knows what Tris is and tries to help her keep her secret by telling Tris to tell others that she got sick during her stimulation and had to go home. Tori manually put in the results as Abnegation to try to cover up Tris being divergent. At the Choosing Ceremony Tris chooses Dauntless and shocks her family and her now old faction. She realizes now that she can’t go back and she has to try to keep her secret a
secret.
During Tris’s initation, she doesn’t do well in the fighting part so she manages to keep herself a secret. During the stimulation part however, she manipulates the stimulation and is aware during it and catches her instructor, Four’s, attention. He knows about her secret but keeps it a secret because he also shares that secret too. He tells her to try to think like a Dauntless so the leaders don’t become suspicious as to why she doesn’t stay under the stimulation for very long. During the final test of initiation, Tris and all the others go into the fear landscape so they are aware during their fears. Tris manages to place first in her rankings and that causes the leaders to keep a closer eye on her. She loses friends along the way but learns that they weren’t truly her friends.
The Erudite devise a plan to kill the Abnegation leaders so they can’t be in the government anymore because the Erudite want to obtain control of it all. The Dauntless leaders agree to Jeanine’s plan and lie to the initiates and tell them they are injecting them with a tracking devise when in reality they were really putting them under a stimulation to kill Abnegation. Tris and Tobias, now lovers know each other’s secret but aren’t completely sure if they are correct. The lovers, being Divergent, are aware during the stimulation but have to pretend they aren’t but not kill anyone. Eric, a dauntless leader, has always been jealous of Tobias and thinks he’s under the stimulation and plans to kill him. Tris gives herself away by protecting Tobias and keeping Eric from killing him. Tobias gives himself up by running away with Tris. They don’t get far before being captured by Jeanine.
Tris got shot in the shoulder trying to run away from the Dauntless soldiers that were trying to capture her so Jeanine didn’t find her useful. She ordered that Tris be locked up and killed. Jeanine did take interest in trying a new serum on Tobias that are supposed to work on the Divergent so he can keep the stimulation going. It switched up his mind by making him think he was shutting the stimulation down when really he was keeping it going. It also made his friends into enemies and his enemies into his friends.
Tris gets put in a tank and is left to drown but her mother, who is also Divergent, came to rescue her. Tris got out and went to where the Abnegation that escaped were staying. Her mother got shot and saved her but Tris felt great grief. Not helping the matter, Tris also had to kill her close friend Will. She felt guilty for it and was grieving over him. Together Tris, her father, Caleb, and other Abnegation went to shut down the stimulation. Tris lost her father fighting the Dauntless soldiers but had to go on and not let him die in vain. Tris had to try to get Tobias to fight the stimulation and after almost getting killed by him succeeded in doing so. Together they shut down the stimulation and destroyed the data.
In conclusion, Tris, Tobias, Caleb and the other Abnegation members traveled to the Amity headquarters in search of protection. The theme of this book is to never stop fighting for what you believe in and don’t be afraid to be different. It isn’t a bad thing to be different and don’t ever let anyone tell you different.
