Beatrice and her mother were getting ready for the stimulation test to see what faction Beatrice belongs in. They were in their plain old house right before the stimulation tests were going to occur. Her mother cut her hair in an Abnegation hairstyle. They aren't allowed to look mirrors because they think it's considered an act of selfishness. Beatrice never thought she fit into the Abnegation way of life because she always felt a little selfish. The author creates a serious mood making you feel how Beatrice is feeling about the stimulation. She was nervous and didn’t know what to expect so she felt a little fear as well.

The Erudite want to control everyone and get angry when they don’t get their way. Divergent people get in the way of their plan because they think differently and aren’t easily controlled. Jeanine tries everything she can to gain control of the divergent.
When Tris goes under the stimulation to try to figure out her faction she belongs to, she shows the characteristics of not one but three factions. Her trainer, Tori, knows what Tris is and tries to help her keep her secret by telling Tris to tell others that she got sick during her stimulation and had to go home. Tori manually put in the results as Abnegation to try to cover up Tris being divergent. At the Choosing Ceremony Tris chooses Dauntless and shocks her family and her now old faction. She realizes now that she can’t go back and she has to try to keep her secret a
