Divergent Character Analysis
The Class Structure in the book Divergent is divided into 5 categories called factions.

These are: Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, Candor and Dauntless. Each faction seeks or

practice their own beliefs; Abnegation is selfless, Erudite is always seeking knowledge,

Candor is always honest, Amity is peaceful, and finally, dauntless practice bravery. The

main character, or the protagonist from the book, is an Abnegation 16 year old teenager

called Beatrice Prior. In the day of the Choosing Ceremony she chooses to change

faction from Abnegation to join Dauntless; while her brother Caleb changes from

Abnegation to Erudite.

The power or the leadership of the society is in the hands of the Abnegation faction. As

At the end of the book the dauntless soldiers

are mentally controlled to take control of the city, but as a result of Fours and Tris’s

divergence, they are able to defeat Jeanine Matthews. In conclusion the Class structure

is divided into five categories which have conflict among themselves for determining

who will possess the power or the leadership of the society.

1. What critique is Divergent doing to our current society?

Class Structure:

Divergent is a critic to our society in the case in which teenagers go out of their

houses and experiment the world by themselves. In the book Divergent, Beatrice

lives in a house with her parents and her brother Caleb. In their house there are

certain rules, prohibitions, and beliefs. Once Tris leaves Abnegation, and enters

Dauntless she discovers a whole new world with different customs, beliefs, rituals

dressing rules, etc. An important example on this would be the tattoos and the

clothing as characteristics of her new faction.

Power/ Leadership:

Divergent is a critic towards the government throughout the whole book. In

The fight

for power, money, and status is a common problem in today’s society. In my

opinion it shouldn’t be like that, we should seek to help others and to avoid

fighting by establishing peace like Amity.

2. What elements of this divergent world can we see in our society?

Some elements of this world of divergent that we can see in our society are:

corruption, social classes ranking, and conflict among people. Talking about

corruption, we see that our governments are corrupted and that they manipulate

things and laws to benefit themselves and not the society. In the social classes

ranking, we can compare all the 5 factions as the working class in our society,

but we can also classify the factionless people as people how are poor and have

nowhere to live. Finally talking about conflict among people, we go back to the

fight for power/leadership. This is represented as the conflict for

power/leadership between the Erudite faction and the Abnegation faction. In my

opinion, I think that these elements are not beneficial for the society as a whole

and that we should change them to make a better

Divergent covers the important theme of power. In the novel the participants during the initiation to become apart of the Dauntless faction, are competing for the highest ranking this is good because it's “the order in which you select a job” there are “only a few good positions.” The characters are taught the better they do the better the outcome will be. Students are taught the same thing, we have to work hard and do the best and achieve “good positions” “There is power in controlling something that can do so much damage. Maybe I do belong here” This shows that Beatrice wants power, and that power can be abused, this book showed me that even the people that were trusted to be leaders could be persuaded to betray the trust all for a selfish reason.…

The book soon reveals how this plan was going to crumble. Factions had rivalries amongst each other. The “factionless” are viewed as the bottom of the society. If someone was born to be in Erudite but chose to be in Amity and didn't work out they would be kicked out and now factionless; hence being the bottom of the society. This society has instilled fear into their public into pushing themselves to the limit.…

As the reader continues through the story, he or she sees how certain symbols are a sign of sadness from moving on, but also that the initiates cannot be defined by just one thing, which makes them Divergent, as well as the great loss…

The trio, despite the warnings, rode the sled along with their cargo; pulled by the remaining dogs who pushed through. Not long after, the ice collapsed under them, leaving a massive hole in the trail. As Buck joined the new team, he’s baffled by the kindness and love that’s being portrayed. The other dogs weren’t consumed by jealousy by Buck’s performance, but was rather friendly and loving. The same can be said with Thornton; offering Buck friendship, love and gratitude compared to his previous masters. Buck kept a close eye on Thornton, keeping him away from harm.…

“By bourgeoisie is meant the class of modern capitalists, owners of the means of social production and employers of wage labor. By proletariat, the class of modern wage laborers who, having no means of production of their own, are reduced to selling their labor power in order to live.” ~ Friedrich Engels. Every person has been classified as something whether it is age, skin color, or wealth. There are various forms of classification. For example, ever heard of social stratification or social economics? It is society's categorization structure of people into socioeconomic strata; it is mainly based upon their profession and income, wealth and social status, or derived power (social and political). Four different classes people are classified as are the proletariat, plebeian, bourgeoisie, and landlords.…

From the edge of apocalypse, humanity has reorganized itself into five factions, each of which preserve and live by a single value. People who believe society fell apart because of greed formed the faction of Abnegation (the Selfless), sworn off of practices considered self-indulgent and pledged to act selflessly. Those who believe the collapse was due to ignorance pledged themselves to the Erudite (the Intelligent), sworn to a never-ending path of complete knowledge acquisition. Those who feel that human duplicity wreaked havoc in the world took the banner of Candor (the Honest), pledging to always speak their minds and the truth. Those who feel that aggression was the root of society’s collapse became the members of Amity (the Peaceful), taking the mantle of peace at all costs. And finally, those who feel that the root of all their problems stemmed from cowardliness formed the tribe of the Dauntless (the Brave), the faction of the courageous and strong.…
