It has been stated that a diverse workplace is a crucial piece to building a strong and inclusive economy that is built to stand the test of time (. This could very well be the foundation to the current workplace diversity movement, but the statistics show otherwise, especially for African Americans. Black/African American men have an advantage over Black/African American women in regards to positioning in corporate America although 46% of African American women complete college, compared to 35% of Black males. The underrepresentation of women in Corporate America should change in years to come as a result of these statistics. This is typically done by the finding of outlets, whether it it’s via sports, religion, music etc. The participants of this study are all success in their respected fields whether they experienced extreme obstacles or didn’t experience any obstacles at all. When the female participants were asked how they were able to cope with the challenges of Corporate America and what their outlets were they responded with:
“When faced with situations in the workplace, I always reminded myself to remain a strong black woman, although I was not sure what it exactly meant in the early stages of my career.. I refused to be disrespected, belittled, humiliated or tolerate demeaning comments. I do not know if I coped with the situations effectively, but somehow I was able to get to where I am now.
