Diversity In The Field Of Psychology Essay
Psychology is the study of how humans, and animals, react mentally and physically to certain stimuli. A "typical" psychologist, in the face of society, would probably be considered a person who sits down with you, listens to your problems trying to sort out your feelings, psychoanalysis you and figures out a way to control, or rather modify, you behavior, otherwise known as a therapist. It is definitely possible for a psychologist to be focused on an area other than clinical and counseling psychology. By going on the America Psychological Association website, someone can see that there are indeed quite a handful of divisions within the realm of psychology. For instance, there is social psychology, bio-psychology, military psychology, cultural …show more content…
The diversity in the field of psychology is outstanding. From developmental psychology to evolutionary psychology, the list keeps growing. Having such a diverse field of study, someone wanting to become a psychologist would be faced with many different areas to choose from, which I consider an advantage, while a disadvantage of having such a diverse list of sub-fields can very well be overwhelming, to say the lest. Browsing through the list of divisions on the APA website, the society for media psychology and technology, otherwise known as divisions 46, certainly caught my eyes in this day and age. Division 46 was founded in the 1980s--brought about to understand the how the fast and growing world of media and technology will undoubtedly affect our lives. Fast forward to 2015 and you can observe as division 46 holds conventions in places like Toronto, with a focus on how media and technology can benefit our society. Media psychology is often misunderstood as just having to do with mass media; but it is much more than that.
