Diversity in America
The United States of America is becoming a very diverse society. There is no real way around it. It will only become more diverse as the years go on. Every year more migrants and interracial couples show up in the US. It is time for all to embrace the different cultures. Many things affect how people embrace this diversity.
The Social Explorer is a very help site when looking at the diversity in the US. It shows some very interesting information. Seeing all the different races and were most of them live is the best way to see the diversity in America. The map makes it seem more real. Reading the information does not really give the same kind of impact as the map show. The information is the same whether it is read or shown on a map. Seeing that information on the map has showed me that there are more people of other races then I would have thought. It also shows that the highest poverty levels have the highest minority levels (Pearson Education, 2012). That were things that I have never really known. I mean that I have read it, but it did not have the impact that the map does.
The Social Explorer maps were helpful with showing me information about the diversity in the US that I did not know, but I did find interesting information about my race. I am a Caucasian. There is a lot of very unflattering information about my race. I knew that we have some advantages but not the extent that we really have. IQ test could also give an advantage to white (Schaefer, 2012). We are still segregating the minority even though the actions are not as obvious as they were in the past (Macionis, 2012). These are just two things that I did not know about my races. We were very domineering though out US history. Many things we did in history were very sad and unnecessary.
