Diversity in the Workplace

August 17th, 2014

Abstract

This paper will discuss the benefits of diversity and multicultural aspects in the workplace. It discusses how diversity challenges and gives opportunities to management and organizations. The paper covers what many of the challenges are and what can be done to overcome some of the challenges. It discusses the different obstacles that come with diversity and how what some of the resolutions are to the obstacles. The paper also addresses gender diversity and physical disabilities.

Usually when someone begins thinking about diversity in the workplace, thoughts of Affirmative Action, racial diversity, or even sexual equality are usually in the foremost of our thoughts.

    Through conducting a diversity audit on the United States Air Force using quantitative and qualitative information, we have observed that this division of the U.S. military has come a long way in the past two decades to make diversity one of the foundations to build and foster an environment where every individual is valued and respected. The company background shows that the USAF has hundreds of thousands of active duty personnel and civilian personnel working at any given time. Our criteria for a diverse organization includes pay equity and employment equity irrespective of caste, race, religion, sex, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, or age. The USAF should create a work environment in which all military and civilian personnel interact with fairness, integrity, and respect. The interviews conducted on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX show that the Air Force’s espoused and operational values are in line with one another.
