1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?
Diversity can be defined as differences in heritage, race, beliefs, customs, mental capabilities, physical appearances etc. It must be appreciated because no one is totally the same as anyone else, even within the groups. If diversity is not valued then it can lead to strength and hatred. We must value our diversity in order to work together for any common good. We something tries to reject what are different.
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?
Ethnocentrism is simply the belief that one's group or culture is superior to another. This can be applied to race, different countries, or even to sexist or ageism issues. Characteristically, ethnocentrism is most commonly applied to race and other cultures, countries. Ethnocentrism is defined as a bad term. "The fallacy of ethnocentrism is committed by people who exaggerate the role. However, in some cases, ethnocentrism can actually be a positive way of thinking. Ethnocentrism can lead to a group thinking they are self-righteous and better than another group. It also gives lead way to judge another culture's way of life.
3. Define emigration and immigration.
The term immigration is a noun used to describe the process by which a person moves into a country for the purpose of establishing residency. In such a case, the individual is not a native of the country which he immigrates to. The term emigration refers to the process by which a person leaves his place or country of residency, to relocate elsewhere. In this case, the individual moving is referred to as an emigrant.
4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?
There are four ways a group of people can be identified are race, ethnicity, religion and gender. Within these four groups there are five faces that they all share that make them fall into a smaller group. Those five characteristics are unequal treatment, distinguishing physical or cultural traits, involuntary membership, awareness of subordination, and in-group marriage.
5. Why do people label and group other people?
People label other people and other group in order to give them a distinct identity in the society. Labeling can give both and bad properties to the person that is being labeled. If it is a helpful labeling, it may donate in increasing ones or the group’s self-confidence, hence; they become inspired and have a helpful outlook in their respective lives.
6. Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain.
Culture is a way of thinking, behaving or working that exists in a place or organization (such as business) Culture is not limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds; it's a multi-layered property of our societies. Not everyone of the same race share the same culture, it can be related to a gender or a nation, or even an age group.
