I completely understand your preference to see physician that you have known for several years and I am with you. Until this week, I did not have a clear understanding between nurse and nurse practitioner. In addition to Nicole’s comment I would like to add that an NP spends almost 8 years of education while a doctor could go up to 18 years. An NPs are more than an RN nurse, beside education, they have to renew their license every few years, take continuing education, while an RN needs a minimum of two years and continuing education varies from state to state (Nurse Practitioner vs. Registered nurse. n.d.).…

If not addressed conflict can escalate into issues that are hard to resolve. Separating emotions from professionalism can be hard to do. Keeping in mind that the reason for employment is patients and their satisfaction with the facility and its care, should make it easier to maintain a professional attitude. Unfortunately that is not always the case. Diversity in the workplace can create some conflict due to different cultures, ideas and styles of performing certain task. Some of the most important sources of conflict in nursing settings are divergent management style and staff perspectives, limited staff resources in the unit resulting in higher levels of stress, differences in goals among work groups and competition (Kunaviktikul et al. 2000, McVicar 2003). In addition, an important source of conflict in the nursing unit is the nurse-doctor dyad. Numerous studies have focused on the relationship between these health care professionals (Fowkes & Mentink 1994, Forte 1997, Keenan et al. 1998). It could be a variation of things. While working with a team of people there will be conflict at some point. The question is how well the conflict will be handled and if an effective resolution can be found. Having all parties involved come to an agreement is the common ground that needs to be reached, but at times unachievable. In this paper we will take a closer look at the parts of conflict…

While reading Watchful Care: A History of America's Nurse Anesthetists by Marianne Bankert, it seems evident that the progression of the Nurse Anesthesia profession is borne by individuals who deemed Evidence-Based Practice a necessity. A search of a formal definition of Evidence-Based Practice turned out to be a futile endeavor, as the concept has evolved with time. Nevertheless, three basic tenets are considered paramount from it; “best available research evidence, patient values (or preferences) and clinical expertise” (McFadden &Thiemann, 2009). A pursuit of these tenants can be seen throughout our profession's history by these “invisible providers” (Bankert, 1989, p.15). These actions have kept the anesthetist knowledgeable and experts…

The Institute of Medicine report asks and answers the nation’s most important health care questions. They produced a report with recommendations for future of nursing and healthcare. It states that high-quality; patient-centered health care will require a transformation of the health care delivery system (IOM, October 2011). The committee that designed the report came up with four key points. The first three deals directly with nursing practice and these are as follows: Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training, through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression. Nurses should be full partners with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States (IOM, October 2011 p29). The IOM report further states that “nurses have great potential to lead innovative strategies to improve the health care system.” (IOM, October 2011, p.222) It found that the nurses are not living up to their potential.…
