When Columbus and his men arrived to the islands, he noticed that the natives were generous, and accommodating because they willingly traded everything they owned and brought them such things like: food, water, and gifts. Since the beginning the natives offered all of their hospitality to Columbus and his men. Columbus believed that the natives were ignorant because they had no weapons for self defense; when he showed them a sword, they had no idea how to use it and ended up cutting themselves. Columbus was more than certain, that he could take control over the natives, and captivate them as slaves. In his writing he wrote, “They would make fine servants….With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” (Zinn, 3) This attitude leaded to enslavement, feeling superior, and genocide by Columbus and his men towards the natives.…
One point to take into consideration when it comes to a negative outlook of imperialism is the fact that the states need from one another. He argues in numerous occasions that neighboring states are being protectionist and forming trade barriers, which in the long run affects them. This is very much one sided because these neighboring states are able to dip into their market, but are not allowing them any form of help themselves. Ferry goes on to describe how when Spanish soldiers and explorers brought upon slavery into Central America that they did not fulfill their duty as the higher race. He continues by saying that the European nation will basically not incorporate the same aspect of that of the Spanish. The higher man has a duty to the lower man. He believes that the more fortunate individuals have the responsibility or obligation to help those who are less fortunate. He also goes on to say that they needed Tunisia, Saigon, Vietnam and Madagascar places of supply, shelters, ports for defense and provisioning. And as gratitude he goes on to say that they will not leave them due to the fact that they need from one…
“ Native Americans have carried the fight, but they deserve backup from everyone with a conscience.” He blasts people by saying if you have a conscience then you will back up the Natives. He hopes to make people really think about it after saying that. Hoping they will look deep inside themselves and realize what they are really doing to the Natives. In the last paragraph he continues and says, “ The Native Americans are the people who have inhabited this continent in harmony with nature for centuries.” After attacking the non conscience people he turns the tables. Saying the Natives are the caretakers and lovers of our habitat and that the oil company doesn’t care what happens to…
Source A is a quote illustrating the concept of ultra-nationalism. This is extreme devotion to or advocacy of the interests of a nation, especially regardless of the effect on any other nations. This is proven when the author states “the English are best at everything”. From this it can be presumed that the author clearly favors ideas like Ethnocentrism, Imperialism, Inequality and Hierarchy. The author says “After all, we’re not savages”, this relates back to the time of the second round of globalization when Christopher Columbus traveled to North America and started the Grand Exchange in the year 1492. The term is used to describe the enormous widespread exchange of agricultural goods and communicable diseases between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. This led to the contact of the Europeans and the First Nations people. At that time the Europeans were very imperialistic and their goal was to extend the rule of their nation over foreign countries. They also believed that their group and culture was superior to the groups already present in the New World. This eventually led to the Europeans calling the First Nations peoples savages, articulating their hate and sense of dominance over them. Another example that relates to this quote is Adolf Hitler, he believed in the Aryan race or in his mind the “master race”. According to him the Aryan’s were people with blue eyes, blond hair and not pale skin, it is tanned skin from Caucasian race, also a German speaker and could not be Jewish or marry a Jew. Hitler believed that this part of the Caucasian race was superior to the rest of the world even though he himself was not blond haired and blue eyed. He went through tremendous amounts of effort with his Nazi Party to eliminate many people like the Jews; his work spread a lack of equal treatment throughout the world. Source A connects to nationalism because the source depicts that the Europeans (English) had a…
They expect us to feed them, but don’t give us anything in return. It feels like stealing. They steal our land, they steal the food, and they try to intimidate us. So we must wage war. I’ve heard them speak of us. They call us “The Savages.” If only they knew that we just want our land, and if they leave, or offer gifts, we may help them. They could be useful to us, after all. They don’t have knowledge of the land. They don’t know the paths for hunting, they don’t know that whatever they are searching for is long gone or has never been here. We might teach them if they stop being so ignorant. We aren’t changing our ways. No strange man can change that. We will stand strong, and we will defend our pride and our heritage. So that is why we…
Throughout the letter he talks about how the natives have suffered leaving their home country. I also believe that his tone was sarcastic in the second paragraph of the letter. When he said "You see what fine thing logic is." He was being sarcastic here because he doesn't agree with the Americans reason for deserving the land more than the…
Dehumanization is essentially treating someone as though they are not a human. In the memoir Night, the effects of this have been shown. Cruelty is causing pain or suffering to someone or something. Night, which is placed during the Holocaust, has shown what happens. The prisoners were deprived of food and other basic needs. Overall, Dehumanization is one of the many types of cruelty and has a major effect on how people act. Over the course of the memoir, many humans were placed in horrifying circumstances that changed many of their thoughts towards survival. Altogether, prisoners were also capable of cruelty as a result of being oriented towards survival and being placed in horrifying circumstances.…
“...about sixty thousand Indians and halfbreeds...absolute savages...our inspectors occasionally visit...otherwise, no communication whatever with the civilized world...still preserve their repulsive habits and customs...marriage, if you know what that is, my dear young lady; families...no conditioning...monstrous superstitions...Christianity and totemism and ancestor worship...extinct languages, such as Zuni and Spanish and Athapascan...pumas, porcupines and other ferocious animals...infectious diseases...priests...venomous lizards”(103) The words he reinforces, no communication, absolute savages, repulsive habits and customs, monstrous superstitions, extinct languages, ferocious animals, etc. can be analyzed through his language and again distinguish between the…

It reads: “It is the capitalist mentality that has fashioned the legacies of the modern world. The capitalist has set in place forces for the development of mercantilism and colonialism to serve personal interests. The capitalist has occupied lands, fought in wars and turned the other way during oppression due to interests. The capitalist comes in many forms, representing groups, representing ideologies, or representing governments, all with the intention of fulfilling imperialistic goals. And in the wake of these interests, look at all the consequences which have been left behind.” This quote shows how capitalism and imperialism had a long lasting effect on First Nations peoples. It tells us about the lasting legacies of the European Colonization of the Americas, such as racism, assimilation, culture and language loss, depopulation and treaties. The author of this source is showing the frustration and anger against the European who colonized what was the Aboriginal people’s home. It also talks about how capitalism and capitalist interests disrupted the normal way of life for the Native Americans and lead to things like a drastic decrease in the beaver population, whose pelts were sent to Europe to make hats with. Someone who would not agree with this perspective would be a European. They might say their capitalist interests are “human nature” or refuse to take responsibility for what they did to the First Nations Peoples and their culture, by colonizing their land. This source is linked to the European colonization and the fur trade. These events both happened because of European capitalism. The colonization of the Americas was driven by the European desire for Capital and wants to establish new colonies and gain more land for their mother country. The fur trade was a result of this, which led to a decline in the beaver…
Environmental racism is probably one of the worse things that can happen in any community. Why does any community have to deal with such tragedy? Racism must stop, African American people can’t do much because of how the white people put us in an unforgiving position. We as black people can’t do anything because we are low-class and have no say so in anything about our community. Our voices can’t be heard because nobody would care because of the position we have been put in. We as a community is struggling and something has to happen. The rich people, which is basically the white people, are in much control as the poor people, which is the black people have no say so and can’t live the life they want.…
Their belief in a natural order aids in the thinking that they are far superior to the Natives they encounter, as the Natives appear to be “heathens.” A heathen is, to put it simply, a person who is not a Christian. “They generally regarded the Indians’ beliefs as dictated by the devil and considered their shamans to be witches, possessed of an evil power to inflict harm on other Indians but not on European Christians.” Therefore, the notion of the Native People being heathens, leads the European conquistadors to consider them on the lower rung of this Great Chain of Being. In his Journal of the First Voyage, Christopher Columbus notes about the Natives he first encounters, “they should be good servants and intelligent, for I observed that they quickly took in what was said to them, and I believe that they would easily be made Christians, as it appeared to me that they had no religion.” Columbus, being one of the very first recorded Europeans to interact with and see Native Americans, creates this assumption form the very beginning that they are an inferior people because of their simple nature and lack of a recognizable religion. An ambitious man, “Columbus hoped to convert the Asians to Christianity and to recruit their bodies and their wealth to assist Europeans in a final crusade to crush Islam and reclaim Jerusalem.” In his mind,…
3. “Your God loves your people and hates mine; he folds his strong arms lovingly around the white man and leads him as a father leads his infant son, but he has forsaken his red children; he makes your people wax strong every day, and soon they will fill the land; while our people are ebbing away like a fast-receding tide, that will never flow again”. He is saying that the red people and white people can never live together because the white men are destroying everything. They are destroying the land, culture and anything that represents the red people due to the colonization. And they could never get along with people…

In the same way, he also opines on the attitude of colonialists toward the natives, “Colonialists are willing to examine the specific individual and cultural differences between European values, assumption, and habits in contrast to those of indigenous cultures"(66).…
