Several movies and social media accounts tend to show violence which could lead to some people trying what they saw, thus bringing them into prison. If the inmate thought that they were going to prison for Rehab rather than for punishment, I think the percentage of repeat offenders will drastically go down. Prison will work better as rehabilitation since the inmates will know that they are going too enhanced their way of life rather than thinking they are being punished. Inmates who think they are going to prison for being “punished” will more likely tend to rebel, join different gangs in prison and think that their group of inmates is superior than the rest of the inmates, causing problems for both the officers and prison inmates.
The “repercussion” of a crime should be geared towards rehabilitation or psychiatric accompaniment, not punishment which I don’t think does anything to the inmate but make them more likely to commit the same crime if and when they get out into society. Punishing an inmate does nothing to deter further crime and I personally think that it’s sending the wrong message since criminal relapse is much inferior in societies that do have “rehabilitation” program.
