Doing Bette But Feelings Worse The Paradox Of Choice Summary
Barry Schwartz and Andrew Ward in their chapter excerpt "Doing Bette but Feeling Worse: The Paradox of Choice" are explaining how expansion of choices in different areas of our life can lead to less happiness. In our modern society we're value our freedom and autonomy more than anything else; it gives us a strong assurance of well-being and satisfaction in our lives. Freedom means to have a choice, which, as we think, is obviously good thing. But the excess of choices can lead to significant disappointment. In order to live prosperous life we are in need of some sort of constraints. It's very important to have a choice in every aspect of our lives; it means that through choices we're managing our futures, and "..telling the world who we are and what we think". But when you have too many choices, you're starting to feel the overwhelming effect of these choices; you're not free anymore. There are two different trends of expansion of choice. One, in areas of life where choice always had been, and expanded significantly. And, another, in those areas where we almost didn't have a choice, and have some of them now. In Frances Moore Lappe’s essay, “Freedom From and Freedom To,” speaker one argues the many civil liberties we are bestowed with give us freedom from government interference. The speaker argues he is free because there is no one there who can determine what to do with his life; he can pursue whatever he desires, whenever he desires. Choice Theories

A choice theory I can personally relate to is general deterrence. I got pulled over today in Hampton. I was going ten mph over the speed limit because my daughter was hungry and crying. I rather speed a little bit so I can get home sooner to feed my daughter. I would never excessively speed with my daughter, but if the speed limit is twenty-five and I’m going thirty-five, at that time, getting home outweighed going the speed limit. I wasn’t thinking about the consequence at the time, but ten minutes later, I got handed an eighty dollar…

Today’s society teaches people to be happy but in that, they focus on the material items to make them happy. Many people in the world define happiness as living a good life or exceeding the expectations of others. But happiness begins with finding what is within, what is one’s true desires in life. People focus more on the price of life than life itself, and they tend to make happiness out of material objects and then not being happy in the end.…

Brent Strawn, a religion professor, believes that many people in modern day see the pursuit of happiness as “‘[having] to do with ‘seeking it’ or ‘going after it’ somehow.’” However, in the 1700s, the pursuit of happiness was not seen as just practicing how to be happy, but actually obtaining it. Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, “‘What then is freedom? The power to live as one wishes.’” The Founding Fathers believed that everyone had the right to be truly happy not just attempting to be. Happiness was not about self-satisfaction or stupefied pleasure, but more of living life to its full potential; it was a choice. Sadly, in today’s society happiness is not a choice for all. Those in poverty, or facing discrimination in one form or another, do not always have the choice to be happy. Mankind has created such a culture that it is almost impossible to truly be one’s self without being persecuted for it. Moreover, the Founding Fathers viewed Great Britain as denying them the right to choose happiness, once again taking away their “unalienable…

Because the uniformity of all people creates stability, the brave new world seems to be perfect. No one needs to live in a state of desire as they should always be able to fulfill their wishes. If they cannot have that satisfaction, they risk feeling disappointed or sad. A horrible fate in this world is to live through periods of desire and fulfillment (Diken 155). The people in this world must maintain feelings of happiness at all times. However, humans are supposed to make the best of the worst situations (Huxley 236). By learning to find peace in times of unimaginable stress, people gain wisdom. Experiencing various emotions are part of the human experience. Thus, people should not be happy all the time. If humans exude monotonous happiness,…
