Donnie Darko Essay
Donnie Darko is a psychological thriller film written and directed by Richard Kelly. For all that, first-time viewers are going to struggle in places. Kelly is a writer and director who refuses to give us easy answers and that’s definitely true in this movie. Even with the director’s cut, the film plays like a joke but is not Donnie Darko should be any teen. That massively heightens the sense of unease but it will also drive us some mile away and make the visual setting important for us. The movie take place in different sitting so suburban in Virginia, Donnie house and backyard especially in his bathroom when he meet his friend Frank, in school, cinema, and psychotherapist Dr. Thirman house. We watched in Donnie Darko move a lot of shot, but one who is all the time present is close up shot. In the camera is always Donnie face and body which filling the frame. The eyes, mouth and part of his body are in the framing system are given to get the Donnie ability to move and act freely in his mission and the story get compiled thought. Throughout the plot we watched long shot when the camera focus in the full body of Donnie's teachers in the school talking. A medium long shot is provided in the dinner table when Donnie family had dinner and we know his family. Always the medium shot and the close-up shows Donnie in the classroom, in front of Grethen his girlfriend or in the Prof.Kenneth class. The full head of Donnie was focused on close-up and medium, extreme close-up shots and all the time shows his moment of reluctant hero into becoming the instrument of
Frank. The elements in the scene explaining the plot forms in dark clouds above his house, Donnie drives into the hills and watches as an airplane descends from above. Events of the previous 28 days recapitulate in reverse order and action, until Donnie finds himself in bed back in the early hours of October 2. As he lies in his bed, waiting and laughing, the jet engine crashes through his room, killing him. This kind of mise-en-scene with perfect design and composition are organization in the balance of space of each shot. Others with whom Donnie had interacted in the 28 days awaken, some looking disturbed. Gretchen rides by Donnie's house and learns of his death from a neighborhood boy, David, but says she did not know him.
