Lack of Responsibility

In the article “Don’t Blame the Eater,” written by David Zinczenko, he asserts that children have the right to sue fast food companies because their food made the children unhealthy and over-weight. Zinczenko believes that the fast food companies cause the childhood obesity because their primary concern is to make profit. Therefore, they do not care about the unhealthy food that their customers consume. He states that the fast food restaurants purposely target young children and teenagers because they enjoy cheap and readily available meal. As a result, they tend to eat at the fast food restaurants, such as McDonalds and Burger King, because they can

For many people, it is commonly known that eating fast food is not a good choice for the health and that it should not be a daily routine for everyday meal. Even though people do not see the specific nutrition fact labels in the restaurants, people already know that these meals from fast food restaurants are high in calories. Moreover, the children cannot prevent themselves from consuming these meals even if the restaurants provided the nutrition facts to them in the package because, unlike adults, most children cannot understand the information that is on the nutrition fact chart. Furthermore, even if they do understand, they do not realize the poor effect on their body from consuming exceeding calories daily. Therefore, the people who are most responsible are the children’s parents. Since the children are just young and, the parents are responsible for their child’s overweight because they decide what is good or bad for their children. They should control their kids from eating unhealthy food from the beginning. For example, they can cook their meals at home that are healthier with ingredients that contain good nutrition, and they also take their children to better restaurants that offer healthy meals.
Although the fast food may be unhealthy, it is affordable, convenient, and

It is convenient for a large amount of parents to make financial provision for their children to buy lunch at school rather than fix a lunch at home. More children live in a two parent household, which means there is less time for the stereotypical parenting duties such as making lunches and cooking dinner. In the essay “Don’t Blame the Eater”, David Zincezenko talk about how fast food has contributed to the increasing amount of obese and unhealthy children in the U.S. Over the years many people has tried to sue these fast food restaurants like McDonalds, KFC, and Taco Bell for making them fat. David uses his own personal experience growing up to help bring perspective to everyone of how easy it is for people to choose unhealthy eating habits. He talk about how his mom worked and didn’t really have time to cook, so to make sure he ate she would have him choose something to eat that would be quick and not the most expensive. If you are looking for something that is inexpensive and a “quick buy” then fast food would be the most convenient. He also…

David Zinczenko’s essay, “Don’t Blame the Eater,” (New York Times, November 23, 2002) emphasizes the idea that the large conglomerates may be held accountable for some legal responsibility for the skyrocketing rate of obesity in America within children. He uses anecdotal evidence from his past to argue that it is not the consumer’s fault that they are experiencing health issues, it is the multinational corporations that own the most well known fast food restaurants. Zinczenko starts by saying that he has been a victim of these large conglomerates as a younger boy. He states that he had a daily task of choosing where to have his lunch and dinner between four well-known fast food chains. Zinczenko also shares that he lost…

In David Zinczenko’s Don’t Blame the Eater, he criticizes the fast food industry's failure to provide nutrition information and the resulting consequences in the American health and legal systems. He argues that we should not blame kids for eating unhealthily but instead look to the fast food industry as the problem. Kids are suing McDonalds because they are overweight and the author has had a similar experience growing up. The problems with kids eating too much has become a national crisis and causing an increase in childhood diabetes. One reason this problem is so serious is that there isn’t any alternative, it’s cheap, and healthy food…

Teenage obesity in today's society is what is discussed in the Article by David Zinczenko. Back in the early 1980s, teenage obesity wasn't mainly caused by fast food or unhealthy eating. In David Zinczenko’s Don’t Blame the Eater article, he blames the fast-food industry for starting the rising obesity problem because of the failure of providing the facts and warnings labels about their high calorie junk food to the consumers. Zinczenko argues that kids are drawn by the cheap, high-calorie junk food that the fast-food chains like McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Pizza Hut are happy to supply because with lots of parents working all day, they do not have time to check what their children are eating. For Example, the author David Zinczenko states that when he was a little boy, his mother would always be away at work, so he would eat Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and at other places every day, and he ended up obese.…

Americans have become hypnotized by the trend of lawsuits. If an individual can find anyway to sue then a lawsuit will occur. David Zinczenko introduces this concept in his article, "Don't Blame the Eater." He states that many frequent eaters of fast food are beginning to sue the corporations because they are now considered obese due to the food served to them at the fast food restaurant. I am of two minds about David Zincenzko’s claim that fast food corporations are to blame for obesity in America. On the one hand, I agree that the combination of affordability and availability vs. healthy alternatives and the lack of nutritional information and have been considered a major cause of obesity in America. On the other hand, I’m not sure if the…

When it comes to the topic of America’s social problems, most of us will readily agree that the obesity epidemic is one of the major problems in America’s society now. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of who is responsible for this problem. Whereas some are convinced “Don’t Blame the Eater”, that the fast-food industry is responsible, other maintains that is a personal responsibility and what you eat is your business. My feeling on the issue are mixed. I do support Radley Balko’s position that it is a personal responsibility “What you eat is you business”. However I find that Radley Balko has over looked some issue on the corporation’s side and I also agree with David Zinczenko’s argument that it is corporate responsibility.…

In Daniel Weintraub’s article “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins In The Home,” the main idea is that parents are the ones to blame for childhood obesity. I agree with his argument. Parents are responsible for teaching their children healthy eating. They can control what they eat, especially if you live far from fast food like we do. The parent has the power to choose what they’re child eats, since they have the obligation to cook and makes sure they eat. Corporations are not at fault. They’re advertisements don’t force you to eat there, If the consumer chooses to continue to eat there after being aware of the consequences it’s they’re fault or they’re parents for taking them there. By now every American should know that fast food has bad results.…

“How much obesity has to be created in a single decade for people to realize that diet has to be responsible for it?” (Atkins). In the essays “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko and “What You Eat Is Your Business” by Radley Balko there are numerous suggestions being shown about the things people take in their bodies when eating fast foods. Zinczenko argues that many children who gain weight because of fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s should not be blamed for their problems. He also provide information stating that they should be able to sue the fast food companies for making them obese (892-894). In Balko’s essay, he suggests that people should be responsible for the foods they consume. Balko argues that people are being less…

The McDonald's Corporation wants to be everywhere that children are. The number of obese children has more than doubled since 1980. Many people blame the fast food industry for making the people of America fat. Most of the people in America blames the companies for selling their unhealthy food, advertising and promoting their food to young children, and creating super sized servings. Having said that, there are people who believe that it is the person's fault for being an unhealthy and obese person. Weintraub's article “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home”, argues that America shouldn't be blaming the fast food industry or the government, but instead the parents. Weintraub explains how it's the parent's responsibility for their own child's health and I agree with him.…

Over the last twenty years, obesity has become an epidemic issue. Children are starting to become obese at a much younger age. Children that are obese are having serious health issues. Do you think Companies of fast food industries are to blame? The fast food industries are implementing more sodium and fat into their food to make the taste better and the portion sizes are starting to become much bigger. The fast food companies could be pressuring children to eat fast food but it’s really the parent’s responsibility on what the child eats at home. Parents not having enough money or being to lazy to make dinner are the reasons why they go and buy fast food for their children. The lack of knowledge on healthy dieting and fast food makes it hard on children to actually know what they are consuming. Parents should be teaching their children good eating habits so unhealthy eating habits don’t form. Parents should really be put to blame for causing their children to become obese and unhealthy.…

Although I agree with David Zinczenko up to the point that we have to take ‘personal responsibility’ for our rise in obesity, I cannot agree that he targets his opinion on that fast food restaurants are to blame. In my opinion the personal responsibility is on the parents in how they choose to teach, guide or show by example on how to make healthy choices. Temptations are everywhere, our parents tell us not to eat dirt, so we don’t so why is the choice of something healthy over junk so difficult. Let us take for instance when our kids go off to school, majority of parents pack their kids’ lunches, usually consisting of a drink, sandwich, vegetable or fruit, and a small treat. It is when our kids are at home that parents tend to forget the healthy choice and choose the cardboard box processed foods, or the, pop in the microwave dinners, that are contributing to the obesity in their children. Convenience is not the healthy choice. Our school systems have also recognized the need for more healthy alternatives within their cafeterias offering the breakfast and hot lunch program making the overscheduled, over committed parent comfortable with knowing that at least at school our kids are eating healthy. Vending machines have been thrown out, leaving little to no temptation. So should parents not do the same within their homes? So should we sue our parents for our obesity or the McDonalds down the street who is only trying to build their sales like any other department store? You don’t need to count calories to know if something is healthy. You should just know that a hamburger and fries is not the better choice compared to a salad and fruit drink. I say “teach your children that if they don’t know what they are eating, don’t eat it`` Make the healthy choice and get outside!…
