The poem “Braggart” by Dorothy Parker shows how one will always want what one doesn’t have, resulting in bitterness, negativity, and insecurity. Parker writes in an alternating rhyme scheme, showing the inner conflict of the speaker. The speaker wants to appear aloof and confident, however is resentful of the fact that the listener has what she desires. This is clearly shown through the lines “The pretty stuff you're made of will crack and crease and dry” (9-10). In this case, the speaker is clearly jealous of the listeners youth.
