Reflecting on the leadership journey of others can be really powerful in understanding your own development as a leader. It also allows you to enhance your understanding of the key factors that have influenced the success of others along with the sacrifices they needed to make. Therefore, as part of your personal leadership journey you need to interview a leader to find out more about how they made the transition from manager to leader.
The purpose:
To find out about their background, how they started their career and how they built their career into a leadership position
To learn about the kinds of resources or personal development they undertook to get to where they wanted to be
To find out about the challenges they faced on this journey and how they overcame them
To get any advice they can offer you on your own progression to a leader in your chosen field Criteria:
Face to face interview
60 minutes in length
Leader needs to be at board level and/or suitability agreed with Careers Consultant
Timescales:
By mid February – discuss shortlist of potential leaders with Career Consultant and discuss approach By 31st March – have conducted the interview
By 28th April – have submitted interview summary via the MBA Hub
Choosing who to interview
You can interview a leader from any field or background. This could be a great opportunity to connect with someone who is working in an area that you want to transition into – or if you are looking to start up your own venture consider interviewing someone who has already taken this challenge. You need to source your own leader to interview. To help you, think about:
What leaders do you currently have contact with? This could be from previous companies, friends or family connections, Linkedin or people you are connected with as part of a
University club or society (both previous or at Imperial)
What networking could you do to find someone to interview from
