Dr. White's Visit To Goldendale Observatory State Park
As I was walking home on a cold Saturday night, I gazed up at the black abyss illuminated by beaming stars. One of the stars glimmered more than the other, but I thought nothing of it and proceeded on my way home. When I arrived, I take notice of the group of men wearing jackets with the NASA logo sitting around the table with my mother. I couldn’t help to feel anxiety radiating from them.As I slowly continue on walking each step got louder and louder until my mother reached out for my hand with a gloomy face. “Take a seat son” she said with a sadistic tone.I assessed the situation at hand, but couldn’t piece it together. A tall, middle-aged, colored man introduced himself as Dr.White and said an asteroid the size of Georgia was headed on a …show more content…
I rested my head back against the cold leather seat ,and told Dr. White to drive to Goldendale Observatory State Park to monitor and analyze the asteroid. After a long six hour drive to Goldendale my eyes squinted to discomfort as light filled my vision. As my eyes adjusted to the brightness I vaguely hear Dr.White’s voice in the background “wake up, wake up we have arrived” he said gently. Once off the vehicle, I was directed into the observatory room. I speculated around and try to hold my intellectually excitement from being baffled by the astronomical instrument to which the 24.5in telescope was center in the middle of the room. Reminiscing back to when I was walking home at night, I remember of seeing an unusual star unlike any other. I slid over to the telescope and embark to look at the constellations but I notice that one of the stars west of Orion’s Belt started to slowly moves towards our planet. As I started to zoom in to what I thought to believe was a star was in fact an enormous asteroid. In all honesty my legs began to shake and my lips began to quiver, but I knew that the task at hand was no child’s play. I immediately began to calculate the amount of time we had left before the asteroid collides with earth and came to the conclusion that

I tried to open my eyes but all I could see was darkness. All around me darkness sits, still and quiet. I heard a creak, then a minuscule and weak voice talked, “Sydney, are you alright?” “Mmm” was all I could get out of my weak and tired body. Then the voice talked to me again, “Sydney, this is Dad speaking. The doctor just told me that the impact of you hitting the seat in front of you was very hard, it blinded you for life.” Darkness grabbed me, never letting me be perky and happy again…

The splashes of the freezing spillway mixed with the cold wind coming off the water sent chills down my back. I yawned, the loud purr of the tugboat next to us made it impossible to hear my uncle ask if I was tired. We were passing the train of barges right after we left the launch and were headed into the woods. I have done all this before. It was all familiar to me. The only difference was that I had never been out here this early. The eerie white light of the moon was the only thing that let us see right now. Luckily for us the moon was huge and full tonight. It was about 4:30 in the morning and we were speeding into the swamps of the spillway. I looked at my uncle and I saw him standing up, driving the boat, with a smile on his face. This was his job and he loved it. When you love the wilderness, being out in the woods for eight hours a day was a treat. Especially when it ended with picking up a paycheck of about a thousand dollars at the end of each of those days.…

We hit a clearing and drop, the world spinning around us, soft grass comforting our throbbing body, the smell. The smell, what is it? It’s new and fresh. We open our eyes and are stunned by the sight. The darkness drowns us, but it is softened by something beautiful overhead; stars, all of them, completely beautiful, each one on its own and every one together. Simply magnificent. We close our eyes and relax, as it seems for the first time in our life, we are completely at peace. Before we know it, its…

In recent years, human culture has been full of writers, directors, and story tellers alike who have been creating fearful tales of outer space; idealizing it as an eternal abyss where you are completely alone with no hope or salvation. giving the idea that if it's not from this planet then “it almost does not matter where they come from” (Fast 158). Instead we should see it as a new frontier of development; an endless span of time and space waiting to be discovered. Yet we still remain here on a tiny planet, examining space as…

Today we watched a video called, “Naked Science: Countdown to Impact.” This video focuses on an asteroid that is heading towards Earth in 2008 and the possible effects that an asteroid has when it collides with Earth. October 6, 2008, for the first time ever, an astronomer discovered an asteroid while it was still in space and was also able to follow it all the way up until impact. This astronomer was able to identify that this object in space was in fact an asteroid by using their Catalina Sky Survey software and taking pictures of a certain part of the sky every fifteen minutes and overlaying these pictures. Since stars remain in the same position, anything that moves becomes obvious. To confirm his suspension he emails another astronomer, this astronomer was able to confirm because his technology to track asteroids came to a conclusion that…

The pauses between footsteps are silences like the rain, and the ice cream cones from yesterday, memories stifling the air. Airplanes throw themselves into clouds, and soon, we will be inside one, flying into space. We'll never be higher than our constellations, but we try. God help us, we try. The endurance of human hope has always been lost on the galaxy. The heavens look down on us in scorn.…

February 2013, asteroid 2012 DA14 is plummeting towards Earth. My science class at Crestwood Junior High was chatting about this amazing phenomenon. Most of the class is just counting down the minutes until the bell rings. But I had just started my journey through the unknown, that is still going on today. Wanting to learn all I can about spacecrafts, planets, asteroids, and the many other things around us. From some of the first spacecrafts, all the way to cool technologies that never came to be. Just like the Dyna-Soar spaceplane that was canceled just before building started. This space age style journey has been going on for more than three years. Over just three short space filled years, I have accumulated two telescopes,…

Stars twinkle down between broken clouds, almost sickly smiling at me. I can see the stars again, I dreamily think, as my heavy eye start to count them. They disappear behind the clouds and it’s nothing but dark. Blinking repeatedly, I stir my head, my neck aching and my body sicker than before. My skin is hot and clammy, my head hurts and the numbing in my left arm is gone, instead, I feel nothing in that limb.…

About a year ago, I came home from work one night and walked into the kitchen to where my mother was standing. There was a feeling of uneasiness and the panic began to clench my stomach. She looked so sad, so stressed; maybe it was the frizzy hair, the bags beneath her eyes, the way her back slouched in a low negative curve, or her eyes. Her eyes looked at me before she turned them away, but in that fragment of a second, it’s almost like I could look inside her narrow eyes and search until I would come upon this thing. This thing has no name, but it scares her. She wouldn’t exactly explain to me what it was but I felt the sudden movements of uncertainty with the way she shifted her body and tilted her gaze away from mine. It’s almost like I started to feel scared too.…

With a subscriber base of more than 680 million, the Mobile telecommunications industry in India is the second largest in the world and it was thrown open to private players in the 1990s. Competition has caused prices to drop and calls across India are one of the cheapest in the world. In September 2004, the number of mobile phone connections crossed the number of fixed-line connections and presently dwarfs the wire line segment by a ratio of around 20:1. The mobile subscriber base has grown by a factor of over a hundred and thirty, from 5 million subscribers in 2001 to over 680 million subscribers as of Sep 2010.
