The major dramatic question that was presented in the play was extending the comical, comedy elements and performance techniques to adapt the tail to an allotted audience. The plot was based around Rapunzel, a woman who was thought to be kidnapped by an evil wicked witch and locked away in a far far away place where nobody could see or talk to her. A prince was on a quest to free Rapunzel from the wicked witch and take her hand in marriage and live happily ever after. A scene that would depict the main issue would be when Rapunzel’s parents agreed to give the witch their daughter and the witch promised them that she will have a good life. However, this was not true and Rapunzel was locked up in a tower in the woods where she could not do anything besides practice her singing and talk to the wicked witch.
The role which I took in the play Rapunzel Uncut was an actor. I played the mother of Rapunzel. Whilst playing the role of the mother I had to develop a voice that sounded like a woman. After a few rehearsals I started to develop a high raspy woman voice which made my character sound really funny and humorous. Learning the lines for the mother role was quite easy, having been involved in “The Small Poppies” play last semester helped me boost my memory skills which made the task of learning my lines for Rapunzel Uncut be able to be completed in a small amount of time. As an actor many tasks had to be fulfilled apart from learning my lines; I had to be aware of the space on stage, be cautious of my blocking and get used to using the props. Through the task of playing a woman in the play, I learnt to develop some traits that were specific for my character. For example, walking, talking and body language. This really enhanced my character to a great extent. Having the majority of people in my class as friends made it much easier to work together and organize things.     Despite being a collection of tales that everyone knows, the play adds a new dynamic to them, intertwining them in fresh and unique ways not seen before. So even though the audience has a general idea of where the story is going and how it will end, Into the Woods is able to pleasantly surprise them with new takes on the stories. The audience is able to gain an enriched experience from the play by seeing before their eyes familiar stories adapted to a more modern take. Even if the audience had never experienced the Brothers Grimm’s stories, the play would be enjoyable nonetheless; however, the added layer of knowledge and understanding adds to the humor of the play when things go awry and unexpectedly, often cued by the actors breaking the fourth wall and raising their eyebrows in surprise at the audience.     Before Grimm, before Supernatural, and even before Wicked, there was one “reimagining of classic fairy tales with interwoven plots and grey scale characters” and that was Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim uses four familiar stories to set the scene for his overarching plot allowing him to concentrate on jokes and creating new relationships between old characters. He also uses familiar characters in ways that blend categories. Through much of act one every character is stock through and through, yet by the end of the play our dashing prince charming has become an unapologetic adulterer, and the wicked old witch becomes an anti-hero. In addition to plot and character Sondheim pays special attention to his musical numbers; just from the first number we understand the characters relationships to one another, their motivations (having children, going to the festival, visiting grandma, and not starving), and we’re introduced to the play’s key metaphor: the woods.     What if the princess wasn’t cursed in the traditional means, and instead turned into a horrendous beast? What if the prince is not a prince, but a monstrous ogre? This musical answers these questions, and also answers the questions of what happens after “Happily ever after” for many of the population’s beloved fairy tales, like the Three Little Pigs and Pinocchio. Shrek, the ogre, gains a companion in the form of a talking donkey, and the two become the most unlikely of friends. However, this is not a simple love story or fairy tale. Despite the comedic jokes and light-hearted themes of the musical, there are darker undertones. Fiona and Shrek both reveal abuse from their childhoods, and the fairy tale creatures reveal the discrimination they faced when they are banished from their homeland because of their status. The central theme of this musical is not of love, but of acceptance of who we are. It celebrates multiculturalism and dismantles racial discrimination. According to Brater, "The freaks' heroic resistance to Farquaad's oppression provides the impetus for the musical's celebration of difference" is the most important aspect of the book (154).
