Through his essay “Competing Theories of Identity in The Metamorphosis”, Kevin W. Sweeny explores three different concepts of identity that are brought to light in Franz Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis. While our social role and conscious mind help establish our character, ultimately our material body determines how we identify, to ourselves and the general public. Through The Metamorphosis, Kafka explores how losing control of the body can conflict the mind, and decimate social status, as well as alter the very essence of one’s identity.…

Dreams are often a way to find comfort in bad times by dreaming of what career path to take, how many children to have, or who to grow old with. However, dreams are also a way to escape from the harsh reality that a person’s life is not always what it seems. Of Mice and Men explains two characters, Lennie and George, who are traveling farmhands. They both have a dream of owning a house with a few acres, a cow, some pigs, a large vegetable garden, some chickens, and have some rabbits (paraphrased Steinbeck 14). These men have had this dream ever since they began working and traveling together.…
Throughout the ages philosophers have been puzzled by the idea of dreams. Humans have written and interpreted dreams. For example,The ancient egyptians wrote a dream book which listed common dreams. Dreams are images, thoughts and emotions you are experiencing during sleep. Even with today's technological advancements, there is still no definite answer to why we dream. Scientists believe that the reason we dream is because of past or present memories, emotions, and unsuppressed and unconscious desires and dreams. After doing research, there are some interesting theories which include: solve problems, wish fulfillment, and to forget.…
Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions and thoughts that pass through the mind while sleeping or daydreaming (Merriam Webster 270). Dreams can be as big or as little as your mind will imagine them. You can conquer the world in your dream life you want to. As for me, my hopes and dreams have no boundaries.…
One may also imagine what it would be like to be in heaven (or hell), or what would you do if you were in the same difficult situation as one of the biblical prophets was in. This is comparable to “day dream fantasy” where there is a mixture of imagination and memory images. In the sleep imagery of dreams we also find past perceptions reconstructed in novel arrangements. Other types of imagery are experienced only rarely. In hallucinations we find internal imagery that is wrongly believed to be external. In supernatural visions we find externally induced, internally occurring imagery. There are several other variables of imagery. Naturally, however, these other variations of imagery are not visualized. They lack the, trust, commitment and…
Sleep in divided into two different categories that are REM sleep that has rapid eye movement, this is where regular nightmares occur and NON-REM that has rapid eye movement. With NON-REM sleep it is also divided into four more stages going from stage 1-4 were night terrors generate in stage 3 to stage 4, this is usually about 90 minutes after a child falls asleep, this is when the child is going into the deepest sleep. Each stage of sleep has to do with particular brain activity. Night Terrors happen due to over arousal of the central nervous system when a child is sleeping. This is happening due to the central nervous system is still maturing that regulates sleep and waking brain activity. Dealing with sleep terrors can be very hard and harmful to other people. When an episode accurse the child usually sits up in bed, has flushing in the skin and accusingly has screaming with waking up confused. In severe cases the child can get aggressive and try to fight.…
So what are dreams? Strictly speaking, dreams are images and imagery, thoughts, sounds and voices, and subjective sensations experienced when we sleep. This can include people you know, people you've never met, places you've been, and places you've never even heard of. Sometimes they're as mundane as recalling events that happened earlier in the day. They can also be your deepest and darkest fears and secrets, and most private fantasies. There's no limit to what the mind can experience during a dream and really no rhyme or reason to what you end up dreaming about. Stresses in waking life can manifest in dreams plainly or be cleverly disguised with imagery. For instance, a dream about a grizzly bear chasing you through your house could be the stress you feel about the relationship with a friend. A dream about being stuck inside of a room with no door might echo your feelings about a…

A performance anxiety dream is when an officer constantly dreams about their ability to deal with danger. Dreams may involve ineffective combat skills or their firearm malfunctioning. In order to overcome these dreams, an officer must constantly be training. Performance anxiety dreams will only disappear when an officer is confident in their abilities. The officer has to be confident that their strikes are proper and effective, or that they know how to clear a firearm malfunction.…
When I was little, I had some pretty bad nightmares. When it started really affecting me, my parents wrote up (in large print) a simple guided meditation script for me. Nothing complex, and nothing fancy. Considering that this script was designed to be read by me if a nightmare woke me, they didn't need to worry about putting me in a suggestible state of mind. All they needed to do was focus on imagery. I don't recall the details, but the image of the shining, fiercely protective unicorn banishing the nightmare to a realm of its own terror stays in my mind to this day, decades later. A few uses of this script, and the nightmares stopped bothering me altogether.…
A tendency definitely exists for the condition to run in families, but researchers haven’t yet identified the gene associated with such attacks.” (Hirshkowitz 250) These attacks are more common in children than adults, researchers say about three percent of children suffer from night terrors, less than thirty-six percent of these continue into adolescence, and even less in adults. (Carranza 37) There are few factors that have been proven to cause a night terror such as sleep deprivation and being off your regular sleep schedule. Other factors such as stress and anxiety have been known to provoke as well. In limited occasions, a night terror can develop from a traumatic experience. Most commonly found in instances with children, a fever can cause…
