Topic: Drinking Age 18 or 21?

Purpose: To persuade students to change their feelings about the current drinking age and the benefits of changing it to eighteen.
Thesis: Underage drinking is to be expected. If an eighteen year old is old enough and mature enough to vote and serve the country in war, he or she should be able to drink. With proper upbringing and schooling on the subject, the drinking age should be changed to eighteen.
I. Introduction A. Attention getter: Have you ever wondered why the age to vote, serve your country, smoke cigarettes, serve on jury, or get married is 18, but to buy alcohol you have to be 21? B. Relevance to audience: of the people on campus under twenty-one, most have enjoyed a beer on occasion. The United States Government will tell you that all of the people are being irresponsible. C. Credibility Material: Is there some secret ceremony we all go through when we turn twenty-one that makes us responsible drinkers? When I 'm at a party I can look around and see people who are under 21 that are ridiculously drunk. However, I can also see an equal number of underage people who are very responsible about their drinking. People who are the age can be ridiculously drunk among the crowd. Face it; age doesn 't determine whether or not you drink responsibly. It never has. With my research on the topic, I hope to persuade you to think twice about your feelings on changing our drinking age to eighteen.
II. Body A. It is no secret that on any college campus any student, regardless of his age has access to alcohol. 1. This access may not be at the bar, but a student may drink himself to a stupor at a party or have an older friend purchase the alcohol. B. A University of Indiana study of students at 56 colleges found that on

Vivian Jones, the author of “Underage Drinking”; questions the drinking age limit, but also wants to decrease the drinking age limit from twenty one to eighteen. First,Jones defines underage drinking as a danger to young adults and teenagers that are developing. Second, Jones states raising the age limit for drinking is a controversial topic in society. Third, Jones acknowledges that drinking underage is banned and as a result this makes more alluring to the young adolescents to drink alcohol and rebel. Should an individual, at the age of eighteen, be able to buy and/or consume alcohol? There is a lot of debate when it comes to legal drinking age in the United States. There is always an opinion, whether you are for it or against it. My paper will cover why I believe that the legal drinking age should be lowered to the age of eighteen instead of twenty-one.…

When discussing an age limit for alcohol, there are many arguments for or against it. We could lower the drinking age but raise the driving age. We could raise the drinking age for everyday people and lower it for soldiers. We could keep it as is or we could try other things such as, teaching kids how to drink in the correct manor. There are so many opinions on this subject, such as the three we read about in “Back to the Lake”, but not one is necessarily correct or foolproof. I think each author made some very valid points, as do many other arguments in this matter. So, how do we decide what is best for this day and time? Which…

Since the drinking age has been raised to twenty-one in 1984, there has been alarming evidence that illegal drinking still occurs between the ages of eighteen to twenty-four, more prominently on college campuses. Although there are a plethora of reasons as to why the drinking age has been raised, there are extensively fundamental reasons as to why the drinking age needs to be lowered in an effort to halt the rising illegal drinking rate. These reasons include teaching responsibility, diminishing the rebellious aspect of drinking, and the lack of enforcement of the law to stop underage drinking.…

Alcohol is a drink that is a huge part of today’s American society, it’s used to make toasts at weddings and even included in certain religions. However, it has the ability to impair judgment and cause people to be reckless. Therefore, in the United States, there are laws regarding alcohol consumption. The most recent and ongoing controversy regarding drinking is whether the legal drinking age should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen. Lowering the drinking age from twenty-one to eighteen would be an effective and beneficial step to help reduce alcohol-related accidents and deaths, encourage safe drinking activity, and allow those of legal adulthood the opportunity to fully and responsibly make adult decisions.…

Back in the 1982, the amount of teens that were killed due to alcohol consumption was roughly 20,000 per year so a legal drinking age was put in place. (Hook) Over the years, the law has saved many people from dangerous or fatal traffic accidents but as time goes on, many still believe that the drinking age should be lowered, higher or stayed the same. The drinking age should remain the same as it already and still save lots of lives already and that the human body will be fully functional by that age. (Thesis)…

Many teenagers in the United States look forward to the day they turn 21 so they can legally consume alcohol. This drinking age was first introduced under the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. Under this act, “all states were required to raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol age to 21” (alcoholproblemsandsolutions.org). Although many adults enjoy alcoholic beverages, some individuals do not responsibly do so. For this reason, the drinking age should be raised to 25 due to the overwhelming amount of evidence proving that alcohol is responsible for many health problems, traffic violations or vehicular accidents, and decreased academic performance among college-aged students.…
