One of the main factors that contribute to the drop out rates is the lack of support. There should be more prevention programs in place at various high schools and locations with high poverty rates. Programs like this will encourage students to work harder in their studies. According to the video, many individuals who do not attend school on a normal basis end up dropping out of high school. One way the prevention program in Bronx, prevented students from dropping out by encouraging students to attend school daily. There is a serious need, of such prevention programs in schools because this clearly demonstrates the participants of the prevention program keeps them on track to graduation and in obtaining a higher education. One thing that surprised me the most was how topics like this are not ever mentioned on the news. This topic needs more media coverage. Our society needs to be aware of such problems that exist in our society. The government needs to step in and help finance schools so that they can obtain or build prevention programs like Dr. Robert Balfanz to help build a better future. Everyone should be treated fairly no matter what someone's issues…

In Nimitz High school, Aaron explained how there were several refugees coming into the community that was poor and financially disadvantaged. Due to that, the percentage of economically disadvantaged families rose from 14-60%. Academics began to deteriorate as standardized test scores were dropping and Aaron made a statement that his family was going to relocate to another community to provide the better education for his siblings. In South Oak Cliff High school, the population of the community was 90% black and Latino. Characteristics that shifted due to the population was that 80% of families were economically disadvantaged and it had the poorest neighborhoods. There were several gangs and drugs in the community; therefore, the school had a 60% of students drop out. Lastly, in W.W Samuel High school, there was a large percentage of Latinos, and several of them did not know English. The school had to have specialized classes and teachers; however, the dropout rate was still significant. Apparently, reasons for students dropping out of school were because of the language barrier and students valuing family over education; which meant they left school early to find fast…
In the article The Right to Fail, William Zinsser believes that the word dropout should not always have negative connotations. Persons who are under a certain age and leave school, or drop out, are often considered failures by societies set standards. Zinsser believes these standards set by society makes failing an almost unspeakable act and that the media, through advertisements and commercials, shows successful people living an American dream, filled with happiness, not the failure associated with dropouts.…

They say how the school used to have the tendency to focus more on the needs of the rich kids, even though the poor students were the ones who really needed the attention and help. They say how the…
