Drought; /drout/ noun- a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this. This occurs when typical rainfall levels are lower than their normal state. After the rainfall decline persists for several weeks, months, or even years, it causes water levels in lakes and reservoirs to fall. One of the largest examples of a drought in our country today comes from the state of California. For example, the California Urban Water Conservation Council. This organization’s mission is to “maximize urban water conservation throughout California by supporting and integrating innovative technologies and practices; encouraging effective public policies; advancing research, training, and public education; and building on collaborative approaches and partnerships”.⁷ In other words, they want to find smart and plausible ways of helping conserve California’s water source. Another involved program that was brought up by the state’s Department of Water Resources is the “Turf and Toilets” rebate. Their goal is to convince citizens to let them rip out there water sucking laws and replace it with more water conserving turf lawns.¹ They also do the same with water-wasting toilets. These toilets are to be replaced with more water efficient toilets. The biggest help there can be for this issue is the people of the United states, and Californians themselves.
