There are different ways to prevent anyone from driving drunk. If for example a friend or love one that I know drank and drove, I will tell him or her not to drive home but rather take a cab or ask someone else to drive. He or she could park his or her and have it driven the next day when he or she is sober enough. Drivers should watch television and see the multiple commercials about drunk driving and the serious consequences. They should learn that drunk driving can cause deaths or other serious damages to properties. The government has been training police officers and other law enforcement officers to spot drunk drivers and that is another way to prevent people from drunk driving.     We have already attempted coming up with a solution to the sale and consumption of alcohol in the 1920’s the Prohibition which was a complete and utter disaster when it failed drastically but turning the sale and consumption of alcohol into an underground crime scene by illegally smuggling alcohol and selling it. With a failed attempt and history repeating itself the government cannot use scare tactics on society as a way to prevent crime within society. If there is a way people will find it to be able to get what they want even if it is illegal to do. We set rules, regulations and laws for a reason which is to deter citizens from making wrong decisions and taking responsibility for their actions. For each law we have it is set up to prevent dangerous situations, crime or the potential for a crime to happen. Within our society the sale and alcohol consumption was minimized by the laws of economics to change things such as the price of alcohol, reducing the hours in which you legally can keep your establishment open, how much one in your establishment is allowed to consume before being “shut-off” for the night, and limiting the ability to purchase alcohol in some states on Sunday. Communities reconciled their differences by putting stipulations on minors having parties and if the authorities showed up not only were the minors arrested but the parents were now held accountable for the actions of their minor children. In addition they added leaving a facility drunk and causing a vehicular accident not only was the party who was driving the vehicle responsible for damages, lives lost, injuries sustained but so was the person whose house or establishment that they left from. Raising the bar on the luxury of consuming alcohol and making sure that people are held accountable for their irresponsibility’s while under the influence, increasing check-points within communities has reduced the statistics on accidents and deaths resulting from drinking and driving…

    The states have taken some effective measures such as immediate lecense suspension, lowering the blood alcohol concentration legal level from .01 to .08 for adults and for people under age 21 to .02. Other's such as sobriety checkpoints, public education, community awareness, and media campaigns about the dangers of alcohol-impaired driving. In addition some strategies should be considered, such as those outlined during the Surgeon General's Workshop on Drunk Driving and in the national plan for injury prevention and control. Such strategies include changing the social norm to make alcohol-impaired driving socially unacceptable, limiting alcohol avilability among underaged youth, a lcohol service training for those who sell and serve alcohol, early alcohol treatment and rehabilitation programs, offering alternative transprotation programs for those of the leagal drinking age, and increasing the perception of the risk for arrest for alcohol-impaired driving. States like California have raised the penalty for misdemeanor drunk driving offenses to a maxium $1000 fine and one year in jail. In July, a state law took effect requiring twice-convicted drunk drivers to equip their cars wit h a breath analysis device that prevents them from starting their engines if they have a blood-alcohol level higher than .02%. And after Jan. 1, people under the age of 21 caught driving with a bolld-alcohol level .01% or greater will immediatley lose th eir driver's licenses for one year. In fact Ohio now allows officials to confiscate vehicles registered to drivers with at least four DUI convictions in a five-year period of those who twice allow their vehicles to be used by someone they know to be drun k or without a license.     Drunk driving is considered a serious crime in every state. It is wrong, irresponsible and wastes many lives. People who abuse alcohol hurt everyone around them, endanger public safety, and create carnage on the nation’s highways.
