Scholarly sources can be used to further support information stated, which demonstrates ethos. In the causal analysis research paper I wrote about psychiatric disorders arising from children who have undergone sexual assault, I included a statistic from a scholarly research paper, “The Long-Term Health Outcomes of Childhood Abuse”, by Kristen Springer, et al.. An anecdote is a short story included in writing that describes a real-life example of a certain situation. These stories can often be used to validify information, giving human-like examples to certain situations. In explaining a concept essay I discuss the various results of othello syndrome. To further explain what othello syndrome is, I used an anecdote to provide an example my reader would be able to understand. I use a news report by Steve Robson which states that in May 2013, “A man strangled his wife before hanging himself while suffering from 'Othello syndrome'. Robert Mercati, 63, had been receiving treatment for the medical condition, which caused him to be acutely jealous and believe his wife Margaret was having an affair. But in May, the couple were discovered dead at their flat in Bloomsbury, Central London....” The story goes on to discuss what have happened in greater detail. Besides just telling my audience the possible results of othello syndrome, using the anecdote provided a more clear understanding. This technique of writing is essential to connecting the reader to your writing; it makes the writing more relatable and easier to
