of soldiers.
His emotions fold in and he believes all is lost without waiting to see that the outcome was much different than he perceived. Titinius was actually circled by his own soldiers. The Quote is supported this way because Cassius wouldn’t have killed himself if the emotion grief didn’t make him believe Titinius was doomed. This way, the author successfully used the literary device Irony because the opposite of what Cassius believed happen is what really happened. Another example from the play is in the beginning when Cassius first forms the conspiracy out of jealousy for Caesar. The literary device for this is point of view because Cassius believes that he is just as great as Caesar and points out flaws that Caesar has that he does not but still the people shun him and worship Caesar like a god. It’s supporting the quote because Cassius would not have
started the conspiracy if not for his jealousy. Another example is when Brutus starts accusing Cassius of taking bribes. He is already mad at Cassius because he believes he would not give him money to pay the army and so he believes this lie causing them to get into and extreme argument. It supports the quote because if Brutus’s emotions didn’t get him so overwhelmed then the argument would have never taken place. Shakespeare uses conflict as the literary device in this episode because they argue and cause a character VS character conflict. The Lord of the flies also has some good examples. The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is another great work of literature that holds examples to support the quote. One example is when the boys see Simon coming out of the woods and in fear, believe he is the beast and kill him. This is supporting the quote because is the boys never feared the beast then Simon wouldn’t have died. Golding portrayed the literary device of conflict in this part of the book by all the boys fighting. Another example is when the boys all start to cry at the end of the book when the naval officer rescues them. They all get sad and realize what they were doing and went back to innocent kid mode. The quote is supported because the boys emotions got the better of them for the whole book and they are now realizing what it has done to them and if it never got the better of them they would have been fine until the officer arrived. The literary device of Irony is used in this case because the naval officer sees a pack of boys playing when in reality they were all being savages a moment ago. Lastly an example that supports the quote is when the boys kill a pig and cut its head off and put it on a stick because they thought the beast would be afraid to mess with them this way. It supports the quote because it is showing that the boys are so besieged by the beast that there emotions completely take over causing them to act completely insane. If this didn’t happen then they would haven never cut off a pigs head like psychopaths. Symbolism is used in this case because it symbolizes the boy’s complete loss with humanity and sanity. These books successfully help verify the quote. The quote “All literature shows us the power of emotion. It is emotion, not reason that motivates characters in literature.” By Duff Brenna is one of the key concepts for writers of good quality to follow. The quote is completely agreeable and two fine works of literature help supply examples that agree with the quote. The book The Lord of the Flies by William Golding and the Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare are some of the greatest books/plays ever written and they both afford solid data of approving the quote. They use literary devices in each example that are what you see in only the best works. To be a truly good book, it must capture emotion so that emotions will get the better of you and blind your judgment to give you the power to do things you normally wouldn’t do.
