Other artists that contributed to the architecture and artwork were Giotto di Bondone, Emilio De Fabris, Filippo Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Andrea del Verrocchio. There are three main features that make the Duomo unique, such as the dome, the Campanile, and the bronze doors of the baptistery. The dome was constructed mainly by Filippo Brunelleschi with the help from Lorenzo Ghiberti. Due to the massive layout the dome portrayed, the artists had difficulties structuring the support of the dome. The people of Florence believed God would send a person to solve this challenge. As a result, Brunelleschi designed two domes: the outer dome allowed light to reflect in, while the inner dome refrained the weather from infiltrating. The light illuminates the church and the people of the faith, therefore connecting them with God and his experiences. Also, the dome was created above Christ and Mary, signifying Jesus’ manner of human and the divine and portraying Mary as the mother of Jesus. Mary is the nurturing aspect of the faith. Light plays a key role for it reflects that God is at the center of everyday tasks, especially in the church. On top of the dome is a lantern which is crowned with a copper ball that contains holy relics. The lower sections of the bell tower portray the creation of man and woman and their duties in the world. The upper sections portray the seven planets along with astrology, medicine, and other technical aspects. The sides of the bell tower symbolize numerous elements such as fundamental virtues, liberal arts, and the seven sacraments. Also, throughout the bell tower are statues that depict patriarchs and prophets. All of these aspects put emphasis on creation of humanity, order, education, and worship of the faith.
