San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church
I attended the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church located in the Old Town Plaza of Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday October 15th. The church was originally found and served by the Franciscan Faris. When I entered the church I was amazed at how small the church actually was. From the outside the church looks bigger. The first thing that I noticed when walking in is the altar at the front of the church. The altar has statues of three iconic saints; the one in the center is San Felipe de Neri. I’m not too sure who the other two saints are. A kneeling angel on each side flanks the saints. When you look up from the altar, you see some anionic imagery of a cross with the symbol of the sacred heart. To the right of the altar, is a statue of Jesus with the Sacred Heart. This statue is both iconic, in that it is an image of Jesus, and anionic with the Sacred Heart with the crown of thorns. The Sacred Heart is a representation of Jesus’ love for humanity. Along the wall is a painting of Saint Joseph, holding a Jesus as a child. There is also a statue of Saint Joseph as the patron saint of the Catholic Church. Below this painting is an altar where the wine and holy Eucharist are stored when not being used during mass. On the left side of the altar is an iconic painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the mother of Jesus and along with the painting of Saint Joseph holding the Child Jesus is a representation of the Holy Family.
Along the sides of the nave, are paintings of the Stations of the Cross. With these paintings we see symbolic, iconic, and anionic images of Jesus. The Stations of the Cross are fourteen images of Jesus as he is condemned to death, carries the cross, is nailed to the cross, dies on the cross, and is then laid in the tomb. At each Station of the Cross, there is a prayer that follows along with the story. The First Station has an image of Jesus Christ being tried and condemned to death.     The Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita is proclaimed to be one of the greatest if not the most magnificent art piece of the Gothic time period. This piece was originally created for the side alter in the Sienna Cathedral but after being passed on to many different Churches it is now located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. In this piece the artist has placed a large amount of iconography into it. The Easiest hidden icon to distinguish is the lilies in the vase in the middle of the picture showing the purity of Mary. Along with the Lilies the artist also has the Archangel Rafael holding an olive branch which is the symbol of peace showing he means no harm to Mary. Lastly, the author also has the Holy Ghost coming down from Heaven surrounded by eight angels representing the Holy Spirit or God is coming into her. Along with all of the iconography there are many other unique characteristics of this picture. For example, it as Mary looking as if she is afraid or startled by the Archangel Raphael coming into her house where as in the majority of the other annunciation pictures Mary is almost welcoming Raphael into the building.     This was commissioned by Palla Strozzi for his family burial chapel. The Adoration of the Magi marks the moment when the infant Christ was first shown to the Gentiles. The theme and the garments of the Magi were appropriate to a sacristy where the clergy dressed themselves and prepared for saying the Mass, during which Christ becomes manifest in the Eucharist on the altar. The frame recalls earlier Gothic examples but the forms are now unified by an exuberant vitality, combined with greater depth and naturalism. The left and right gables feature roundels of the Annunciation, while in the central gable a youthful God blesses the scene; and the prophets recline in the spandrels. In the predella, the Nativity, the Flight into Egypt, and the Presentation in the Temple appear almost as one continuous strip. Three small scenes in the arges of the main panel narrate moments in the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem. In the left arch the Magi gaze at the star, in the center the kings ride up on a road toward Jerusalem, and on the right they are about to enter the town of Bethlehem. The cave is evident, along with ox, ass, and manger, and the modest family. The oldest Magus prostrates himself before the Jesus with his own crown on the ground; the second kneels and lifts his crown; the youngest waits his turn.     Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31).     The church of the Sagrada Familia is a five-nave basilica. The central nave rises above the others significantly. Each nave is a door that is assigned to the unfinished glory facade. There are also two side portals that lead to the penance chapel and baptistery. Behind the nave, in the apse, is the altar, in the light of the many windows of the apse. Here are ten basic facts about Sagrada Familia: Work on the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia (the Church of the Holy Family) commenced in 1884 and continues to this day, Gaudi did not produce accurate designs of the building; he preferred an organic process where his sketches would change and evolve as it was being built, he even took up residence on site so he could resolve all issues as they happened, The work on the Sagrada Familia was interrupted by the Spanish civil war in 1936. During this time anarchists destroyed parts of the models and Gaudi’s sketches, making it difficult for his successors to accurately recreate his vision, there are plans for the church to have a total of 18 towers. They represent Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, 4 evangelists and the 12 apostles, Francesc de Billr was the original architect on the building, he designed a neo-Gothic style church, but after a year of disagreements with the founder, Josep Bocabella, the role was handed over to a young Gaudi, Gaudi spent 40 years on the Sagrada Familia, his last 15 years were dedicated solely to the project. He died 3 days after a tram accident, and is buried within the Basilica’s Crypt, visited by 2.5 million people a year, it is Barcelona’s most popular tourist attraction.
