The Martyrs Picture By Durante Alberti
The Martyrs’ picture by Durante Alberti represents the relationship between the 3 separate beings of the Holy Trinity: The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. It also tells us about Jesus through His blood, the weeping angels and hatless priests and bishops, and lastly, the temple.
First, in the picture God the Father is sitting on his throne and the dove which is the Holy Spirit is above Jesus. The spirit is transcending from the Father and the Son. The Son is in crucifixion position while He is being held up by His Father. To me, this represents the powerful relationship the Father, Son and Spirit have. To get through to God, there isn’t a requirement to first go through Jesus because they relate perfectly and they are never separate. Although

To the right of the altar, is a statue of Jesus with the Sacred Heart. This statue is both iconic, in that it is an image of Jesus, and anionic with the Sacred Heart with the crown of thorns. The Sacred Heart is a representation of Jesus’ love for humanity. Along the wall is a painting of Saint Joseph, holding a Jesus as a child. There is also a statue of Saint Joseph as the patron saint of the Catholic Church. Below this painting is an altar where the wine and holy Eucharist are stored when not being used during mass. On the left side of the altar is an iconic painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the mother of Jesus and along with the painting of Saint Joseph holding the Child Jesus is a representation of the Holy Family.…

This is yet another well-known story from the Bible. It shows a child kneeling on the ground embraced in the arms of someone who means a lot to him. According to Frank this painting symbolized a disobedient son who left his father and home to be on his own and when he had nothing left he crawled back expecting his father to turn him away. But he did not open his arms to let him back in. The painting demonstrates the Baroque style. The emotion and drama involved show the most heartfelt part of the story, not the pain or betrayal only the love of a father and son. The light is brightest on the father and son. Here he interprets the Christian idea of mercy with an extraordinary solemnity, as though this were his spiritual testament to the world (Web Gallery of Art,…

In the Ural School’s portrayal of The Entry into Jerusalem on panel, we immediately look towards the focal point of the painting. There we see a man wearing red and blue drapery with an Aureole (decorated in gold leaf) around his head; the golden halo, the use of red color (symbolizing the presence of god and strength), and blue color (symbolizing good health and human beings) allows us to recognize this figure as Jesus Christ. Christ is seen wearing a red garment with a blue garment wrapped around on the outside, this is to represent that he began as God and became human while you can view his apostles wearing the opposite colors; representing that they began as humans and have come closer to God (”Icons: Symbolism In Color.” 1).…

The first panel is the donors that commissioned the painting by Campin, the second panel is the same Annunciation scene of Mary and Gabriel but depicted quite differently, and the third panel is Saint Joseph. This painting pays close attention to clarity and detail, with varying colors and realism. The painting is in oil, and has a style that reflects the Northern Renaissance period. For example, the angel and Mary do not have halos, and it lacks linear perspective. The lack of halos, as well as Mary’s face (which doesn’t seem too happy about the fact that she is about to conceive Christ’s child) could relate to the religious separation that Northern Europe was experiencing during the Renaissance. Northern Renaissance art is very well known for its symbolism, and in this painting nearly every object is symbolic of spiritual ideas (Harris). For example, lilies represent Mary’s virginity, Joseph’s tools represent the Passion of the Christ, and the extinguished candle represents God taking human…

Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned is the depiction of Theotokos. The Virgin being the mother of God, and God being shown in life form is the personification of this theme. Many of the altar pieces produced were intended to be portals. The nimbus surrounding the child’s head depicts Christ in the piece and the connection to him. All the halos around the other figures signify the holiness of The Virgin, prophets, and the angels. The flowers being offered by the angels symbolize purity, the coming sacrifice of God, and The Virgin being a rose among thorns.…

    The Annunciation Analysis

Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31). Symbolism can also be found in the frame of the painting. The three arches at the…

The statue depicts Jesus on a cross during his crucifixion, which is the killing of someone by nailing them to a cross. On the top of the cross, a slip of paper with the letters “INRI” can be seen. This is added because “INRI” is actually the initials for the Latin title that Pontius Pilate had written over the head of Jesus Christ on the cross. The actual meaning is “Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm” which translates to “Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.” The initials are in Latin because Latin was the official language of the Roman Empire. Aside from the paper, Crucifix also displays the five holy wounds. In Christian tradition, this is the five piercing wounds that Jesus had to suffer through during his crucifixion. Four of the wounds consist of the two nails stuck through both of his hands and the one nail stuck through both feet. This counts as four wounds since both feet were pierced. The last wound is the one on his chest. This is here because his body was pierced by the holy lance to make sure he was dead. On Jesus’s head, a crown of thorns can be seen. This was added because the crown of thorns was put on Jesus’s head to mock him for being the “king of the Jews.” Jesus in the Crucifix reflects the changing style of art during the Renaissance because the artwork was mostly focused on his death. Unlike the late middle ages, Renaissance art often depicted…

The title of the painting comes from the three key figures; Christ on the cross, God the Father standing on a ledge behind Christ, and the Holy Spirit which is symbolozied by a white dove. Masaccio put everything on common level. The painted figures are roughly life-size. For an average person, their eye-line view would have been above ground level with Death in the form of the crypt and skeleton directly in front and the promise it Salvation above. The figure behind Jesus on the cross represents God. Prior to the Renissance it was unheard of to actually paint God. What expressed humansim was the face he painted God with the resemblence to a man. Not only did he…

The paintings illustrating Christ’s crucifixion emphasize both his sacrifice to rid the world of sin, as well as the idea of everlasting life after death. For example, the Triptych with the Crucifixion, an oil painting on panel, illustrates the portrayals of Christ that were commonly repeated throughout the medieval period. The scene of the Crucifixion in the middle is supported by a scene of Pope Gregory the Great experiencing a vision of Christ during Mass and a scene of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child. The closed side panels also show a scene of the Annunciation, in which the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive the Son of God. These four scenes all share the common purpose of reinforcing the idea of Christ as a man, but also briefly suggest his transcendence. Although he is not the most imposing or impressive character in each scene, from conception to posthumous miracle, Christ is the clear subject matter in every case, demonstrating the dual nature of his divinity and…

The crucifixion of Jesus in the Dream of the Rood varies considerably from the depiction given in the Biblical account of John. Mainly the perspective is different in the sense that the “Dream of the Rood” is told, in part, from the perspective of the cross itself. Referred to only as the “tree” in Dream of the Rood, the author puts considerable attention and detail into describing the eloquence of the cross. “It seemed to me that I saw a very wondrous tree, lifted into the air, enveloped by light, the brightest of trees. That beacon was all covered with gold” (4-6). In the accounts of John, the cross is mentioned only to tell that Jesus carried it himself.…

    Dream of the Rood

The rood tells of how soldiers were forced to carry “him” on their shoulders and set him up on a mountain, just as Christ was forced to do before his crucifixion. The rood continues to display his bravery as he stands steadfast even though the earth was trembling, for he “dare not act against the Lord’s word.” This depiction of bravery in the rood is to parallel the bravery Jesus showed and his experience as there was an earthquake during his crucifixion. He expresses how he was “pierced” just as Christ was pierced, and how he was mocked just as Christ was mocked by onlookers. The cross seems to physically suffer as it “raised up a mighty king, the heaven’s lord; I dared not bow in homage.” This scene represents all the suffering that Christ endured, yet his bravery prevailed.…
