The hemispheric domes of the past and present have many symbolic meanings; which many may argue sprouted from the inspiration of the Pantheon. The dome feature could be used for many different purposes and these thoughts are inspected in the hope of revealing some truth.
The Pantheon, in classical architecture, was a Roman temple dedicated to all the Gods, or possibly, in this case it was devoted to those Gods with no distinct temple created to honor them. The Pantheon, also known as the rotunda, is a circular building with a domed roof. The rotunda is lighted by a circular opening about 27 feet wide, in the crown of the dome. In the building there is a sculptured frieze that depicts famous French heroes and the symbolic figure of France. This temple is now a resting place to honor the great men of France. Another prominent building influenced by the Pantheon is The Dome of the Rock in Israel. The shape or dome is a symbol of ascent to heaven by the prophet and by man. The octagonal or square structure is a step from the fixity of earthly manifestation to a circle, symbolizing the perfection of heaven. This structure even stretched far enough to reach many sights in San Antonio, including the St. Anthony's Main Post Chapel. This church has an enormous glass dome hovering over the center of the arrangement and offers an endless sight into the skies. St. Anthony Church grabs your attention with its antique architecture and vast size and achieves its splendor through the interior dome. The dome seems to impart an openness or endless amount of space, and makes you feel closer to both the sky and
God.
Domes are both useful and decorative; they are frequently of great size and often produce a monumental effect; achieving their significance through these features. Even in the 19th century numerous city halls, universities and public libraries echo this Pantheon's structure. This structure is definitely much more common today, due to innovative materials that help make the dome sturdier with less difficulty. Though, the original design of the Roman architect has lost much of its significance, and it is in our own age, sadly, that the divinity seems to be dying.
