the assaulters.
First, this is an over view about this letter. When Farrow was seven years old, her step father used to sexually abuse her. At first, she did not know he used to abuse her, and she thought that is normal. One day, she asked her mother about Woody Allen behaviors; that is when she realized she was sexually abused. However, Allen denied, although there were several medical reports assist she getting sexually abused. Allen forced her to keep it secret. Until Allen nominated for the Oscar (Farrow, 2014), that pushed her to speak up about her trauma.
Farrow wrote using simple words in her letter “Favorite, took, trouble, mom, things I did not like” ( Farrow, 2014), to reach the mind of her audience smoothly and avoid any distraction could be occurred while reading this letter.
First, because she played on the ethics value of the story, and made the readers draw a complete image about her trauma and feel it, as I felt her misery while reading. Her emotional way of stating ideas attracts the readers. For example, she reminisces the memories of a child stripped from her innocence, as when she said: “ My father had been doing things to me I didn’t like. I didn’t like when he would stick his thumb in my mouth... "(D. Farrow, letter, February 1, 2014). In addition, the question asked in the beginning and at the end of this letter “what’s your favorite woody Allen movie?” "(D. Farrow, letter, February 1, 2014), made me realized the radical influence on my opinion about Woody Allen. Honestly, I will not watch his movie anymore. Since the audience are human, have emotions and empathy, they will think directly about their daughters, sisters, or even themselves. Surely, hey will find this letter forceful to change their minds and think about other silent women who suffer from such kind of abuse. In the last few years, frequently we heard about the sexual abuse foe women and girls, it can be from her husband, her father or a stranger. All of this crimes were awful, so we should not shrug off or dismiss, we should call out and punish
the assaulters. In our society people are afrai to talk about their sexual harassment experience, due to lack of awareness about the dangers that will follow their silence. Silence usually leads to a bigger problem. Nowadays some NGOs responsible for protecting such these cases, foe example “Kafa”, an active Ngo in Lebanon defined women right and children as well. In addition, campaign which was in the American University of Beirut and the near regions “Mesh Basita, It’s not okay” tackles the women’s right and defends against the harassment.
NGOs try hard to change some laws to protect the victims. Actually, they did and forced the Lebanese government to cancel the law 522. Which include that if the rapist marries the victim, he will not be punished, they voted to cancel it in 16/ 8/2017. (citation)
Add law
Those NGOs continue their path to change other laws, personally, I am now working with kafa and we will make a campaign to raise awareness about all types of violence against women and children, it will be inside AUB or outside it. This lette gave me enough motivation to do my best and make a successful campaign.
In conclusion, sexual harassment is a dangerous phenomenon which has become widely spread in our society. All of us should stand up against it and fight to protect the victims in our society.
