Many cataclysmic and apocalyptic waves of destruction hit the human race fast. The first wave was an EMP that shut down everything using electricity after being detonated and which left the whole world in chaos. Next, large weather problems started to occur. Then disease hit huge parts of the world further decreasing the number of remaining people. Who will survive the destruction? What special personality traits do these few individuals possess which will shine during extreme hardship and deprivation? For example when the small group of survivors are discussing what options, they have, one man suggests not saving a fellow teammate. Cassie immediately challenges this idea and Cassie argues, “Forget me. Forget Evan. Do it for yourself”” (176). Cassie’s inspirational words show strength and determination. It is evident that one of Cassie’s most positive and helpful character traits is being able to make herself and those around her motivated and hardworking. This small but impactful speech showed her drive to never give up. She not only convinced the small group to attempt to save a fellow teammate, but gets them fired up and ready to face this difficult rescue. Stated simply, Ben is not very intelligent and never has been a helpful member to the group. While Ringer is strong and cunning and Cassie is smart and clever, Ben is just not as important. On page 176 Ben makes an old, obscure literary reference. Everybody is momentarily impressed by Ben’s burst of intelligence when he mentions Don Quixote, one of the most influential spanish novels. Ben says to Cassie after she suggested a not fully thought out plan, “go all Don Quixote on this” ’(176). He then goes on to confirm his thoughts that Don Quixote, the man, not the novel was in the movie the Godfather. The Godfather is a 1972 American film while Don Quixote is a Spanish novel first published in the year 1604. These two pieces of entertainment are very different and to confuse them is foolish.
