E-Cigarettes has been around for years and are sold everywhere; such as in the mall, on the streets, tobacco store, etc. There is some way to get a hold of one. They are vapors that are powered by batteries and arouse the feeling of tobacco smoking. Some look like regular cigarettes and others are high-tech looking; producing arousal vapor when inhaled, but not all contain nicotine. E-cigarettes were made to replace cigarettes because they were supposed to be healthier than cigarettes but turn out, through research, that wasn’t completely true.
E-cigarettes can be harmful, but advertisement makes them seem healthier than regular cigarettes. No health risks are ever stated. When inhaling the liquid vapor, harmful substances …show more content…
The normal cell HaCat, which served as the control and two other cells HN30 and UMSCC10B were treated with two brands of 1% vapor, V2 and VaporFi, for two week. A natural comet assay, a technique used to detect DNA damage, was used to evaluate the extent of DNA damage. The test showed that the DNA strand break had increased in cells exposed to e-cigarettes vapor with nicotine in it when measured by y-H2Ax immunofluorescence. Y-H2Ax is used to show the cell death of HN30 and UMSCC10B in V2 1% vapor with no nicotine, HN30 had the highest cell death. With V2 nicotine and .5mM in Cigarettes, UMSCC10B had the highest cell death significantly. With .5mM of just Nicotine, they had the same number of cell deaths. After that, a flow cytometry was used to determine if cell cycles were altered. The HNSCC cell lines was tested to see if there were altered through UMSCC10B and HN30 being treated for a week by the same brand and volume. Compared to the control, they both were altered in the present of nicotine. The HaCaT cells were treated again to see the differentiation amongst the cells. They found that without nicotine cell death increase 5 folds and with it, 10 folds. The more exposed cells were to the vaporized E-cigarettes liquids, clonogenic survival decreased in both normal and HNSCC cell lines.
The research of E-cigarettes showed they are more harmful than regular
