Social networking. Facebook and Twitter aren’t even close to played out yet. Consumers can increasingly “like” or follow a favorite retailer and get discounts or tips on deals. JCPenney is using Facebook to actually sell goods and more than 12 million consumers “like” Victoria’s Secret on Facebook as of last month (March), making it the most popular retailer on the site (its Pink brand ranks No. 2, according to the ChannelAdvisor Facebook Commerce Index). That’s an active population of customers reaching out and requesting information from the retailer. And social shopping is just getting started, says Jim Okamura, managing partner at Okamura Consulting, a group specializing in online retail. “There’s evidence (that Facebook offers) a good return on investment and there are a lot of retailers that haven’t done anything yet,” he says. “This is going to be the year of Facebook testing.…

In today's businesses e-commerce is becomingly more effective in the modern world. Two major companies stand out, one solely relying on online business and the other both store and online services. Most individuals are familiar with these companies, Amazon and Nike. Both of these companies carry strong points in their own right, and as demand for their products grows, so does opportunity. Amazon was once very plain and unattractive but was still the primary bookseller for consumers on the Web, and Nike was a small growing firm that made athletic shoes imported from Japan, making its presence in the American market.…

Amazon is a website offering numerous product categories ranging from books, to videos, to music, to technology products, to health and beauty products, to sporting goods, to automotive and plumbing products (the list goes on and on). It is like stepping into a virtual Wal-Mart with an emphasis on books, entertainment media and entertainment products. Amazon has distinguished itself as a leader especially in these categories by delivering products quickly, cheaply, and with no hassle guarantees. The site is laid out in a very intuitive way that makes it easy to understand and follow. Features like browser history which tracks what you have already looked at, one-click check out, and Prime membership which offers reduced shipping to its members have proven to be extremely effective. Perhaps the weakness of Amazon, if there is one, is that it is a website is designed for “everyone.” The actual appearance of the…

Amazon.com began in 1995 as part of the retail “catalog and mail-order houses” industry to serve consumers, sellers, enterprises, and creators of content with a vision of providing the world’s largest selection of products and advertising (Amazon, Inc. 2008; 2009; 2010; 2011; 2012). As a platform to connect buyers and sellers as well as a seller in its own right, Amazon sells and/or facilitates the sale of a massive variety of products from books and movies to gifts, toys, electronics, apparel, computers, games, tools, sports equipment, home décor, furniture, jewelry, grocery items, office products, musical instruments, and much, much more (Amazon, Inc., 2008; 2009; 2010; 2011; 2012). Because their “businesses are rapidly evolving and intensely competitive” (Amazon, Inc., 2012, p. 5), Amazon competes against other online retailers, e-commerce providers, brick-and-mortar retailers, and digital content providers, but has positioned itself as a reliable, efficient, and cost-competitive entity with an excellent reputation and strong customer service (Amazon, Inc., 2008; 2009; 2010; 2011; 2012). Amazon, Incorporated has positioned itself as the “go-to” online retailer for just about everything with customer service that will ensure successful trades between its sellers and consumers (Amazon, Inc., 2008; 2009; 2010; 2011; 2012).…

The simple model that Amazon operates under is its key to success. Amazon uses little more than a bare bones online platform to sell its products meaning a minimal cost structure. At the same time, this business model requires no asset investment in physical store locations. Through an online platform, Amazon can offer products from a variety of sellers on a global scale, allowing them to mitigate expensive shipping costs. This online platform also means increased transferability to mobile devices, meaning they can offer the same services through application stores and exchanges.…
