I was not familiar with “developmentally appropriate practice” prior to reading Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs. The book reaffirms my belief that teachers need to know their students and empower them to reach goals that are both challenging and achievable. Teachers and parents want their children to be successful, so understanding the importance of DAP helps in developing a teacher/parent partnership that is sustainable. One of the founding principles of DAP is educators need to keep in mind that children need to be met where they are. All teaching should be appropriate to a child’s age and developmental status, encouraging them to be unique and responsive to their social and cultural contests which they live outside of the classroom.…

In the letter I will define DAP, the benefits with examples, why I believe the use of the textbook-based curriculum may be inappropriate. I will give reasons for the potential negative effects of the textbook-based curriculum and how it can be developmentally inappropriate to literacy development. Developmentally appropriate practice, also know as DAP, is a different approach to teaching. DAP gives the opportunity for the teacher to nurture the child’s social/emotional, physical, and cognitive development. They base their teaching in three practices: theories of child development, individually identified strengths and needs of each child uncovered through authentic assessment, and the child’s cultural background as defined by his or her community, family history, and family structure. I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed. I chose a place where I can sit, observe and write my note as well as to be away from children's sight. In the classroom there were five boys, two girls, and two teachers Ms. Nadia and Ms. Emma. The classroom itself was large and spacious. The classroom is very appropriate for children this age and it has many interesting areas such as a blocks and art area, and children taped some of their previous work in the art area. The color of the class is bright and has interesting posters like calendars with the name of children’s birthdays. Also.
