Early Exit Essay
Importance of an Early Exits Out-Of Homelessness: It is important to find an early exit out of homelessness because a longer stay can make it less likely for an exit out of homelessness. Many who enter into homelessness first encounter youth hostels, emergency accommodations and Out of Hours Services (OHS). In these accommodations, it is very likely for a young person to engage with other peers living in the hostel or care setting and get involved in the ‘homelessness scene’. In these accommodations, a young person is typically provided with a bed at night, but has the entire day from early in the morning until late at night to be on the streets and find things to do. This is a period that many individuals in the study talked about getting involved with other homeless individuals and partaking in drugs, alcohol, criminal activity and violence. One young man who was 19 at the time said, "Everyone that was in it (adult hostel) was on it (heroin) ... Yeah, looking at them stoned and they’re all talking about it. The relief that it’s supposed to bring them so I just tried it and liked it”(Mayock et al 2008:130). This is a common statement that so many of the homeless youth individuals experience because they don’t feel that they have many other options. They are put into ‘risky’ accommodations and meet several individuals who are participating in these risky behaviors. One young man aged …show more content…
Fewer transitions once in the system is important because the more movement between accommodations in homelessness can be harder for a young person to experience. With early exits being so important, that includes having access to stable housing. Housing must also be an affordable living situation for that young person and they will need support as well. That includes professionals, family, friends and job or educational support. With all of these factors, it is possible for a permanent exit outside of homelessness (Mayock et al.,

Imagine a busy metropolis where people are hurrying off to get to work, strolling along the street window shopping, or running to catch the train. However, in the midst of all these people is a teen who is wondering how and what they will eat that day, and where they will sleep that night. One may ask, why is this teen homeless? How did they become homeless? Why get into trouble with the law instead of getting help? Homeless youth are socially marginalised and often perceived as potentially dangerous, up-to-no-good hoodlums with no future. However, what constitutes as a homeless or street youth? A homeless youth or street youth is an individual who is 25 years old or younger who have been forced to leave their families of origin; have run away from their homes without the consent of their parent or guardian; left foster or group-care placements; those not living on the street but remain engaged in street-involved activities; and those who identify with street culture (MacLaurin & Worthington, 2012). Currently, there are 279 homeless people under the age of 18 in Edmonton, and an estimated 65,000 homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 24 across Canada (“Time to act”, 2013). An ongoing issue with youth homelessness is that it is understudied in Canada (Brown and Amundson, 2010). Although it may be easier to turn away when encountering street youth, this unresolved issue would eventually inflate rather than deflate, in the future. In addition, the longer a youth stays homeless, the more likely they will turn to more serious crimes to survive. Reducing negative perceptions about youth homelessness will be the first step in finding plausible solutions to getting homeless youth off the streets and out of the justice system. Homelessness persists on account of the need to reduce preconceived judgements by understanding the underlying risks and factors of homelessness…

While rates of alcohol and drug abuse are disproportionately high among the homeless population, the increase in homelessness over the past two decades cannot be explained by addiction alone” (“Multiple Factors”). Addiction is a very big factor in homelessness, but there are others, too. Mental illness makes up for about 16% of the adult homeless population. Many cases are very severe and persistent. (“Multiple Factors”). The fact that these people aren’t in homes that can help them out is absurd. More people should be open to helping these people out by referring them to homes or even starting something themselves. Mental illness should not be a reason that someone is out on the…

“On any given night, there are over 600,000 homeless people in the U.S.” (Quigley, 2014). Most find themselves sleeping in homeless shelters, short-term transitional housing or someplace uninhabitable. While there are many circumstances that can create homelessness, the major causes are high poverty rates, racial disparities, single parenting, domestic violence, lack of affordable housing, mental illness, and other traumatic experiences. In cases where the homeless person is single, lack of affordable housing, poverty, and unemployment were the leading causes. In cases where families are homeless, substance abuse, lack of affordable housing and mental illness were the top cause. In this research paper, I will try to unveil the factors that…

Substance abuse and being homeless are indistinguishably intertwined. One triggering factor of substance abuse is the consequence of being homeless. Most adolescents who are homeless usually have other disorders such as; serious mental illnesses, chronic physical health problems, and some even have a history of trauma. They need safe housing, appropriate interventions, and client-centered care. It is estimated that half of all people who are homeless have diagnosable substance use disorders at some time in their lives. It is also estimated that alcohol abuse occurs in half of the homeless and drug abuse in a third of this same…

My friends and I left the restaurant, laughing. It was getting dark and the city was beautifully lit. We smiled and chatted as we walked through downtown. Suddenly my eyes fell on a young woman arranging her sleeping quarters in the middle of the sidewalk. She looked barely older than me - she could have easily been a college student. The girl sat down and pulled a few dirty blankets over her body, preparing for the night’s sleep. I was staggered by the similarities between the two of us. Her face stuck in my memory as I got home and climbed into my comfortable bunk bed. People my age weren’t supposed to be homeless, were they? Where was her family, her connections? Why would she be on the streets? Were there more people like her or was she an anomaly? I realized I knew nothing about homelessness and had instead been subconsciously analyzing it with my own preconceptions as a basis. But I wasn’t the only one allowing myself to remain so misinformed. Research shows there are almost ubiquitous misconceptions concerning homelessness and the stigma against it, especially when it comes to the demographics of the homeless population, the amount of crimes…

Starting School Later A big topic in the news right now is students, especially athletes, not getting enough sleep due to a combination of athletic practices and events, homework, and family activities. Having to get up at six o’clock is already extremely challenging, but it becomes even more difficult when students have enormous day ahead of them, including school, practices, homework, and anything else needed to be done. Starting school later would be the perfect solution to this, and would give all students a chance to sleep later each day. Sleep is necessary for proper brain function, and is needed, especially for high school students, to maintain proper health.…

    Homelessness In America

In a section titled “Causes of Youth Homelessness,” it first stated that the “same factors that contribute to adult homelessness such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, low education levels, unemployment, mental health, and substance abuse issues, can also play a role in the occurrence and duration of a youth's homelessness.” These were good points that brought up questions in regards to parent-youth relationships and some of the long-term effects, which I decided to come back to later. Furthermore, it said that beyond these factors, “the phenomenon of youth homelessness is largely a reflection of family dysfunction and breakdown, specifically familial conflict, abuse, and disruption,” which I agreed with. Though the article did not specify further, some types of conflicts that came to mind were disputes over risky behavior such as promiscuity, opposing views on discipline, and sexual orientation. When it comes to domestic abuse there are many layers including physical, emotional, sexual, and mental that, along with the conflicts, leads to the deterioration of families. The brief continued to say that youth usually enter a state of homelessness as a result of running away from home- which the desire and reaction of escaping from these predicaments is understandable- or from being abandoned by their guardians. Additionally, it stated that family conflict is “more critical for youth than adults since they are, by virtue of their developmental stage in life, still largely financially, emotionally, and, depending on their age, legally dependent upon their…

On any given night in the US, there is about half a million homeless individuals. 40 percent of that are homeless youth. It is important to say that exact numbers of homeless youth are hard to determine because the lack of standard methods and the mobility of the homeless population. The amount of homeless youth is staggering and heartbreaking. There are many factors that lead to homelessness, and many consequences…
