Our first true Environmental Movement in 1970 was a groundbreaking step towards the reality of our worlds health, making American History. This unforgettable first step towards helping our earth for the future is called Earth Day. Together we can reflect on our past and go green! Our children are the future and we must protect the planet for them. Earth day in 1970 is an important event for American Citizens to learn about because it brought attention to the physical damage we were causing to our planet, teaches us ways to help our earth, and is the start of a breakthrough tradition our entire world follows today.

On Earth day April 22nd 1970, over 20 million Americans joined together to take a stand for our planet. Demonstrations were being held all over communities. People took a stand for our Earth showing support in places like parks, streets, and schools’. “Gaylord Nelson wanted to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.” (United States History Book). “[It] must be the years when America pays its debts to its past by reclaiming the purity of its air, its water, and our living environment.” said President Nixon. Many new Acts around the country were placed to protect our environment such as the “Clean Air Act”, “Clean Water Act”, and the “Endangered Species Act”. We must learn to reduce the amount of unnecessary materials we use, reuse our resources that we are so privileged to have, and recycle our materials so that they can be used again. We can also spread awareness, pick up trash outside, and plant trees for our environment to
