An earthquake is a sudden, rapid shaking of the Earth caused by the release of energy stored in rocks. It is a natural phenomenon like rain. Earthquakes have occurred for billions of years. Descriptions as old as recorded history show the significant effects they have had on people’s lives. Long before there were scientific theories for the cause of earthquakes, people around the world created folklore to explain them. In simple terms, earthquakes are caused by the constant motion of Earth’s surface. This motion creates build up and releases energy stored in rocks at and near the Earth’s surface. However, Bangladesh lies in active earthquake zone. Recently, some serious and horrible shakes occurred in Bangladesh have made the experts worried. For example, on the last 10th of September, two back to back shakes of 4.8 and 3.2 on the Richter scale have occurred. Alarmed by these shakes people are terrified and experts have called for developing an earthquake resistant building code which all building should follow as mandatory. Experts said that the shakes between 2.0 and 4.8 on the Richter scale are alarming a major shake which can ham Bangladesh horribly. On the other hand, another category of experts think that the concern should not be amplified. But the RAJdhani Unnayan Kartripakkho (RAJUK) responsible for the development of the city also thinks an earthquake resistant building code should be developed. To conclude, a vigorous campaign is the crying need to create consciousness among people to minimize losses by
