The Influencer book discusses what it takes to be able to implement influencing strategies in the organizational atmosphere. In this essay I will discuss why leaders can face hardships when trying to influence others. I will also discuss steps a leader can take in order to make this task of influencing others easy. The hardest part of influencing someone in an organization is finding the right technique. Most organizational leaders try to implement change through certain techniques that do not work. When techniques are proven to not be working, a leader must not give up or stick with the same technique that is not working. An influencer needs to find the vital behavior if anything is going to change. There is
no use putting together techniques if they are aimed towards the wrong actions. (Patterson, Grenny, Maxfield, McMillan & Switzler, 2008). A leader must be able to diagnose what behaviors he or she wants to change. Knowing the type of behaviors that need changed will help the leader develop a plan to implement the behavioral change. (Patterson, Grenny, Maxfield, McMillan & Switzler, 2008). Several elements will need to be changed in order to motivate individuals to go with the change. Influencing sources must be used in order to have a lasting change in the organization. A well organized and systematic approach needs to be taken in order for any behaviors to change. Just like in our society, change is inevitable in any organization. Influencers must understand that continuously adding new influencing strategies to implement change is not the best way to obtain their goals. Influencers need to make it clear to employees what they are trying to accomplish, and find the best technique to make change natural. Influencing others is not an easy task in any organization. Influencing others and changing behaviors definitely has its hardships, but a good leader is one who can do so. In order for an influencer to have an easier time implementing change, they must understand the techniques that need to be used in their organization. Following these processes will make the life of an organizational leader easier.
