Conway told Walter that he can’t participate in any class activity until he brought his mom to school. Walter couldn’t tell his mother about what he did. So, on page 45, he had to spend class time alone in the back of the classroom. However, he secretly brought some comic books for him to read, but Mrs. Conway saw what he was doing, and took the comics away and tore them up. Mrs. Conway then called Walter “a bad boy. A very bad boy”. Afterwards, she gave Walter a book called: “East o’ the Sun and West o’ the Moon”. It was a collection of Norwegian fairy tales that Walter really enjoyed reading. So much so that he asked Mrs. Conway if he could take the book home. However, she said no, but he could read it every day in class if he could behave himself. Walter promised that he would, and for a whole week he read the book and loved it so much that Walter called it “the best book he had ever read”. This was when Walter realized how much he loved reading, and Mrs. Conway kept giving him more books to read while Walter was doing a good job with his poems.
