Eat Drink Man Woman
Foreign films intimidate many people; it could be the culture shock, or it could be the hesitance to reading subtitles for two hours. Despite these setbacks, foreign films are some of the best made and Eat Drink Man Woman, directed by Ang Lee is no exception. Eat Drink Man Woman offers many elements of a great movie such as excellent filming techniques, interesting and unique characters, and unanticipated plot twists. Eat Drink Man Woman focuses on the story of a retired chef and his three daughters. The oldest daughter, Jia-Ning is a Christian schoolteacher that is somewhat of an old maid. Jia-Jen, the middle child, would probably be classified as the sexy one, and works as an airline executive, and Jin-Rong, the youngest, works at an American fast food restaurant. All three daughters still live at home with their father, Mr. …show more content…
For example, one would expect the "sexy, accomplished middle-child" to be the one out of the house first, but that is by no means what actually happens. First, Jin-Rong announces her pregnancy and that's she's moving in with her boyfriend (that the family didn't even know about!). The entire family drops their jaws in astonishment. The next surprising twist was a very surprising one. Jia-Ning, announces that she has eloped! Keep in mind that this old maid has never had a (real) boyfriend and that the family didn't even know she was dating anyone. They drop their jaws again. The biggest shock of the movie was Mr. Chu's marriage announcement. He had been spending a lot of time at Mrs. Liang's apartment, so naturally everyone thought he would be proposing to her. When he makes a toast to her, everyone's fears become reality, but it turns out that he is actually asking Mrs. Liang for her much younger daughter's hand! The entire family's jaws drop to the ground. All these people getting married leaves Jia-Chien in the house by

An example of this is when Emma and Cher, respectively, ‘adopt’ Harriet and Tai. Harriet Smith is an innocent, 17 year old orphan of unknown parentage who Emma takes under her wing. Tai is the new girl at school who Cher adopts also, because she’s ‘so clueless!’. Tai, like Harriet, does not possess a high social status and comes across as a bit rough, noticeable by her accent, her cheap red hair dye and her statement, “You guys, I’ve never had straight friends…

The use of shifting perspectives throughout the film allows the barriers that exist between the two generations’ cultural values to be explored; while the mothers are deeply rooted in their Chinese heritage and the values, norms, expectations, etc. of that culture, their daughters have more westernized worldviews. However, although conflict does unfold due to the differences that exist between each mother/daughter pair, a strong bond is present in each relationship. This undeniable bond is seen through loving actions…

This brilliantly written script has many innuendos of these scholarly ladies acting a bit like men in order to make the point that women can and should have equal rights. The plot thickens when Ben Weissman (Patrick Dempsey) tries to seduce the beautiful Alice Paul. Weissman shows Paul how to feel sexy, and that it’s okay to feel like a woman. Von Garnier has incredible insight on how to make a woman feel beautiful when she flashes pictures of Paul taking a bath, shots of her lips, and her smiling.…

    The Veldt

One of the main elements of the story is the characters. The father, George, fit his role perfectly as an individual who appeals to the common interests of his wife and children, seemingly wanting them to remain content with his actions. Lydia, the wife, plays a very anxious character overcome with emotions, which helped set the tone. One portrayal of this would be the passage where she proclaims “That’s just it. I feel like I don’t belong here. The house is wife and mother now, and nursemaid. Can I compete with an African Veldt?” expressing her consistent feelings of incompetence and inadequacy as a wife and mother. Peter, the son, is very smart for a child. George described this best in saying “He’s a wise one for ten. That I.Q of his-“. There is no doubt that his savvy, neurotic intellect was behind the veldt land in the nursery, and the events that followed. The daughter, Wendy, seemed innocent enough although the feeling of her being enabled by Peter, her brother, does come off as alarming as she seemed to be scheming right along with him as to what was to happen with their parents. She has been extremely desensitized by the nursery and the Happylife Home, as she does…

When the idea of a birthday party comes to mind, it usually associates feelings of a joyous and lavish celebration shared with family and close friends. Contrasting toward that idea, Katharine Brush in “Birthday Party” portrays how joyless a marriage can be when the two companions are bound to the stereotypical notions of how their relationship should be like.
