Should Americans be concerned about the Ebola outbreak in Africa? Explain
The Ebola outbreak in Africa is a terrible thing that spread unexpectedly and raised many fears amongst Americans. 1 in 4 of Americans in a recent poll said that they were worried about Ebola spreading to the U.S. These fears are wholly not supported by evidence and should be discarded.
All of the leading authorities on diseases in the U.S and throughout the world do not think the outbreak will expand beyond Africa and that it is not severe enough to become a pandemic. An estimate of the CDC is that in a worst case scenario the most people who could die from this disease is about 1.4 million which would be bad but this is a worst case scenario and is small compared to the worlds population and that of the U.S.
Only 3 Americans have been infected with Ebola and have been treated and all have survived. With only 3 Americans infected there should be no cause for alarm after all it would require the infection of many more to start an outbreak in the U.S. Also the infected people would have to go untreated without anyone noticing they had Ebola for a period of almost 21 days, which is unlikely considering the level of attention this infections is getting.
Lastly there are many resources being focused on the outbreak in Africa which are preventing the disease from getting any worse. The world bank pledged 170 million dollars of support to the worst hit countries in Africa. President Obama has also been shifting attention to Africa saying
