1. Study the Case Study – The Pirate Bay: Searching for a Safe Haven, pp. 46-49, and answer the following questions:
a. Why did PTB believe it was not violating copyright laws? What did the Swedish court rule?
b. How has TPB managed to continue operating despite being found in violation of copyright laws? c. How has the music industry reacted to the problems created by pirate like TPB?
2. Choose an e-commerce Web site and assess it in terms of the eight unique features of e-commerce technology described in Table 1-2. Which of the features does the site implement well, and which features poorly, in your opinion.
3. Search the Web for an example of each of the major types of e-commerce describe in Section 1.1.
Prepare a report describing each Web site (take a screenshot of each), and explain why it fits into the category of e-commerce to which you have assigned it.

    Online piracy is the act of sharing on the internet, through different means such as peer to peer channels or torrents, copyrighted files and programs without the consensus of the copyright holder. Although this was not a big issue in the early days of the internet, with slow connections and a limited amount of internet users, in the recent years it has caused enormous losses to the music, film and program industries. The most accurate recent data affirm that “ the total loss to U.S. sound recording producers from physical piracy is estimated as $1.630 billion”1. Of course, piracy existed before the invention of the internet. Some may argue that scribes monks were the first pirate, given that they copied book without anybody’s permission but, more recently, bootlegs (that is, unofficial recordings) of concert and the habit of recording songs from the radio through cassette players were far from unusual. Nobody was worried about this kind of piracy because it was very laborious and did not allow the pirate to make an infinite amount of copies without expense: for one person to copy a cassette or a vinyl took time and raw materials, and it would have been, if not cheaper, less time consuming to directly buy the album.     COPYRIGHT VIOLATION AND ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING 1. Give an outline of the attitudes to copyright violation and illegal downloading as presented in text 1 and 3. Peter Sunde describes in text 1 how the internet is being controlled by a corrupt industry. He describes an incident he had with his co-founders for The Pirate Bay (TPB). TPB allows people to share and download music and movies regardless of copyright laws. They were convicted of contributory copyright infringement. But the infringement was not the biggest problem. It all started when the Swedish prosecutor sent out a note, saying that TPB was not guilty at main crimes. Hollywood was not happy with this note and forced the Swedish Minister of Justice to visit the White House to discuss it. Sweden was forced to get rid of the site otherwise they would not be allowed to trade with the U.S. The Swedish prosecutor therefore raided TPB as illegal. Peter Sunde became a suspect. During the trial Peter and his co-founders were refused to say their appeal. The biggest problem is that people are allowing a dying industry to dictate the democracy. Peter Sunde is trying to make people aware, that they have to spread and participate in culture and not let the industry succeed. In text 3 though, Wendy Cope describes her own opinion on illegal downloading. It is very easy to copy a poem, whereas it is much more difficult to photocopy or download a whole novel. Wendy says that the authors of short, funny poems are most vulnerable. The problem with copyright is that people do not know and respect copyright laws. Many enthusiastic readers have no idea that they are breaking the law. Every author hopes that their work can outlive them. Wendy’s biggest problem with illegal downloading is that no one buys her book. If you want a copy of a particular poem, you do not have to buy a book. Instead you can get it off the internet. 2.
