In the last decade, municipalities have been faced with vacant housing parcels from foreclosure. Municipalities have struggled to maintain residential buildings and stabilize housing stock. One particular municipality that has struggled with this issue is the City of Blue Island. Blue Island has been slow to recover from the amount of foreclosures it experienced. In addition, Blue Island has faced steady population decrease. According to the Homes for a Changing Region report, the national foreclosure crisis, contributed to vacant units nearly doubled in Blue Island in the past decade. This report will address the following:…
The increasingly high property taxes put an extreme burden on the real estate market. I can speak from…
Gentrification, when wealthy individuals buy and renovate houses in poor neighborhoods, a word often associated with the displacement of poor residents of run-down urban neighborhoods. Gentrification has its pro’s and con’s, so naturally the supporters list the positives, while non-supporters do the opposite. In “Go Forth and Gentrify?” by Dashka Slater, the author explores the positives of gentrification for the community, newcomers, and longtime residents. Dashka Slater, a journalist who often appears in the New York Times, Sierra, and San Francisco Magazine. Mother Jones, a liberal magazine, published “Go Forth and Gentrify” in July 2007 encouraging home buyers to buy houses in poor urban neighborhoods. During this time housing prices were decreasing and the housing bubble was about to burst. Many families lost their homes to foreclosure and had nowhere to go. As a suggestion, Slater urges readers that it is alright to move into a poor neighborhood because the home buyer will positively impact the neighborhood.…
Over the past forty years marriage, divorce and cohabitation rates have fluctuated significantly. For example, the number of divorces has increased from 27,000 in 1961 to 153,000 by 2006, whilst the Telegraph newspaper reported that ‘one in six people are cohabiting as marriage rates decline’. Why is this? There are multiple reasons for these varying statistics.…

The film Ordinary People main focus is on Conrad’s family issues. Many conflicts in the novel slowly destroy Conrad’s family. This raises the issue of Conrad trying to commit suicide. The major theme that defines this novel is healing. Calvin and Beth Jarrett, are both high middle class white parents living in the suburbs. They go out and party a ton ever since the devastating lost of their oldest son Buck, in a boating accident. This brings a negative vibe to the family, which is why Conrad and Kelvin start to attend a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist Dr. Berger convinces Conrad and Calvin to make them express exactly how they feel. The issues that the Jarrett family faces, contradicts the film’s title of them being an ordinary family. Once Conrad was released from the hospital, he gave the audience the message that he was not ready for the world. He was not ready to become independent and it was very difficult for him to let go off his past. Now was his chance to catch up with friends, and a swimming team to participate in. Although life at home was slowly recuperating, Conrad’s parents would leave the house to help clear their minds from their son’s death. Calvin would leave parties slightly drunk and so would Beth. The purpose at the end of the day was to have a fantastic time and to develop happiness to themselves. In the film there were flashbacks that always lead to a symbolism in the film. Conrad had so many nightmares he had to attend the psychiatrist Dr. Berger. It got to the point that Calvin had to join him too. Dr. Berger is considered a symbolism in the film because he is the analyzer of the family. He put’s a lot of effort trying to solve the problems that were involved with the Jarrett’s. He created solutions for Conrad and Calvin to release their thoughts that were never spoken. Another symbolism is a text to world connection. At one point of the film The Jarrett’s go to visit Beth’s mother and father for thanksgiving. After a intense argument…

“Real estate values have deflated to such an extent that a record number of people owe more than their homes are worth. That’s not the American Dream – it’s a nightmare”…
As modifications are made and longtime residents removed the region irreversibly changes into something new, and all of the personality along with its rich antiquity is replaced by frilly boutiques and cookie cutter housing complexes. The area begins to take on a new life, and as this transition takes place the things that made a neighborhood a loving memory quickly becomes a fleeting idea. This isn’t to say that change is necessarily unwarranted, but if something is going to change it should because the people have allowed it, and they will be around to enjoy those changes. The modifications brought forth by gentrification are solely enjoyed by those moving in. The residents being forced out are gone before the area has fully reached its new chic status. With them goes the memory of their neighborhood all the child banter from playing baseball in the lot, along with the gossip filled bodega at the corner of the street. All of this replaced by upscale dessert shops and high rise, lofts for newfound professionals. The security that a home used to provide is stripped for the benefit of those that want to live in the new “it” area. Nation (2016) writes “Developers targeting young professionals and global investors have sent a surge of capital into places where public and private dollars once fled. Families in these areas that never escaped the recession are now feeling the shove.” This…
There are several issues that I have learned about this week. There are several factors that are involved in overcoming generational poverty such as education and relationships. Migrant and seasonal farm workers work very hard but yet live in generational poverty. They face several challenges when working and their families also are at risk in repeating the pattern. I also learned about the challenges that older people face when there is a lack of access to employment. Women also face unique challenges through the different life stages.…
The most expensive condominium in the city of Miami was recently listed at 55 million dollars. The building has no special provisions for flooding, even though it too sits on a floodplain. People continue to build and buy million-dollar homes and businesses that have no protection against the coming tide (Paquette). Developers have begun to look forward to the crisis of sea-level rise and are planning villages that float. One proposed idea for a “floating village” on land that floods regularly costs 12.5 million dollars per unit (Parker). Even if the rich and famous may be able to live in post-flood south Florida, it is out of the realm of possibility for an average citizen to keep his or her home or buy a new home in the…
As an atheist I don’t believe marriage is still important to society. This is because (as written bellow) in this country the purpose of marriage has as recently as the 19th century been commonly used as a form of business, money power and survival. However the change in our society has made marriage considerably less important when compared to, for example two hundred years ago. Today, it is seen as socially acceptable to have children outside marriage and due to legal reasons divorces were uncommon. There were very few love marriages. Most in fact were driven by the prospect of money, for example since women had poor education they had little options so needed someone to support them. Men benefited financially as when they married their wife they had control of their inheritance including property and money. This contrasts directly with our 21st century ideology of marriage being to show commitment and love. Moreover in 2012, 47.5% of all UK births were outside marriage, this total made up only 4.2% of all births just 75 years ago showing how ideas about family and relationships have changed since then. Furthermore, the number of marriages has been steadily declining since the 1970’s to around half to just 232,443 in 2009.…

Introduction: Love is an emotion that we feel for some fellow human beings. Love is a basic dimension of human experience that is variously conveyed as a sense of tender affection, an intense attraction, the foundation of intimacy and good interpersonal chemistry, willing self-sacrifice on behalf of another, and as an ineffable sense of affinity or connection to nature, other living beings, or even that which is unseen. According to Sri Aurobindo : “There is usually a hope of return, of benefit or advantage of some kind, or of certain pleasures and gratifications, mental, vital or physical that the person loved can give. Remove these things and the love very soon sinks, diminishes or disappears or turns into anger, reproach, indifference or even hatred”. One way of looking at marriage is as a rather odd sort of package deal, an exchange in which the two parties agree to share income, housing, sexual favors, and a collection of productive activities such as cooking meals, cleaning house, washing dishes, and rearing children. Seen from this standpoint, the motivation for marriage is, in part, the existence of economies of scale in production--it is easier to cook one meal for two people than two meals each for one person--and, in part, the advantage of division of labor. A marriage is simply a particular kind of two-person firm. Basic Research Questions: 6.How the knowledge of the economics of love can be put to use by any individual or any industry? Methodology: Research has shown that basic economic principles can be applied to intangible concepts like love & marriage. Various economists have done research on these topics and have tried to explain the concepts of love and marriage using economic analysis. In this paper the methodology applied was as follows: The first approach was to build the basic research questions mentioned above based on which the analysis was to be done. The basic objective of this paper was tried to be summarized by these questions.…
