Mass tourism refers to a vast number of tourists, usually on package vacations with all accommodations included. Mass visitation jeopardizes the natural environment and decreases service quality at key sites. Increased construction of tourism and recreational facilities has increased the pressure on resources such as minerals, fossil fuels, fertile soil, wildlife, etc. and on scenic landscapes. Ecotourism is focused on conserving, interpreting, and understanding the area visited, while contributing economically to the local society. It has become a great part of sustaining natural resources and supporting sustainable development. Within the country, there are many organizations (approximately 700 in just Ontario) that opt to preserve the natural environment and habitat of specific plant and animal species within an ecosystem. Current data from across the country also reveals that citizens are distressed about the environment and sustainable development. Canadian groups such as The Canadian Wildlife Federation, Canadian Environment Network, The David Suzuki Foundation, Pollution Probe seek to conserve the natural environment from threats to help relieve such distress. Approximately 845 species have become extinct while around 15,590 are threatened. Loss and destruction of habitat affect 86 to 88 percent of all threatened bird species and amphibians.
