Emily Elizabeth Dickinson and Edgar Allan Poe are two of the biggest poets in American Literature from the 1800s. They had many things in common from their writings about death and sadness, because of their unfortunate losses in life, to the fact that they were both born in Massachusetts. They were also different in many ways. They were different in the way they looked at life and wrote about their experiences from it. While it is obvious they had many differences, they also had many things in common from their lives to their styles of writing making them amazing writers.

Both Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson had many similarities and differences in their lives itself. Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19th, 1809. Edgar was a poet, editor, critic and author. Edgar lived with his mother, father and two siblings but when he was three his father left then his mother died shortly after. Poe was left as an orphan and was taken in by the very wealthy family of John and Frances Allan. Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on December 10th, 1830. Dickinson lived with her mother, father and siblings. Dickinson was born to a wealthy family that had strong community ties. They had similarities in their lives because they were both born in the 1800s, both poets and both raised in a wealthy family. Emily Dickinson was also a poet but just a poet. Unlike Poe, she didn’t do much else but write poetry, she wasn’t an editor or a critic. Also unlike Poe she wrote very privately, where Poe was publishing his writing. Another thing they had in common was although Poe had more of a rough childhood they both grew up wealthy. But Edgar on the other hand had a hard time making a living off of writing alone, where Emily didn’t have to. Edgar was a talented writer and made his living as such and given that, he had a regular lack of funds. On the other hand, Emily had a regular stream

Edgar Allan Poe is a brilliant author who wrote amazing stories and poems using various emotional effects. Throughout his lifetime he went through lots of tragedy and personal conflicts. Within his pieces of literature he uses his creative writing style abilities by making readers feel emotional effects such as horror and sorrow. With all of his past conflicts, I believe it made him a lot better at connecting to readers in other ways certain authors couldn’t. Poe’s style is characterized by his use of sound imagery, irony, and repeated elements.…

The great Emily Dickinson is known for her inquisitive and powerful poems, but what made her poems so notable? Emily lived a simple life, mostly secluded, so why would some simple poems change how people thought about such difficult subjects? The answers are in her style of writing. Her seclusion allowed her to “meditate on life and death” and write about such controversial themes and topics that are still being discussed today (Allen 546). Her ability to highlight important words or phrases or cause a short pause or accentuate a certain phrase cause people reading her work to entirely stop and think about what they had just read. Emily Dickinson’s style, involving odd punctuation, unusual capitalization, and meticulous figurative language,…

Popular literature is incomplete without the names of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both of these authors lived in the same time period, yet lived very opposite lives. In fact, Poe received notoriety for criticizing Nathaniel Hawthorne. (Poe, 1847) In his career, he wrote several critiques of Hawthorne’s work. On a personal level, Poe often disagreed with how often Hawthorne used allegory. As a literary element that many people use, Poe was not a fan. He once stated that: “I allude to the strain of allegory which completely overwhelms the greater number of his subjects, and which in some measure interferes with the direct conduct of absolutely all.” (Poe, 1847) It seems as though Poe regarded Hawthorne’s work as works of allegory. To say that this was the only literary element he employed, however, would be false. Throughout history, authors have endeavoured to master other forms of literary elements, to become the master of those elements, and equal to none in them. By comparing “The Cask of Amontillado” with “Young Goodman Brown”, is to study two masters, at odds with their specific forms of writing, but each a master in his own right. Each story shows how two people that can be so far apart on a scale, can use the same literary elements in similar and different ways without compromising their work as a whole.…

Emily Dickinson, though an inspired and dedicated writer, was not even slightly recognized for this by anyone outside of her small circle of confidants and family. Extensively reclusive, Dickinson’s poetry only left this circle when it was published apparently without her permission, and these unwanted publications further fueled her repulsion for having her work shared. The influences behind Emily Dickinson’s work will be thoroughly explored and picked apart, including “Because I could not stop for Death”.…
