He was separated from his siblings, William and Rosalie, and went to live with a couple in Richmond, Virginia. The husband John Valentine Allan, was a successful tobacco salesman. Poe took better to the wife, Frances, because John encouraged Poe to follow the family business. Poe was already quite interested in poetry by the age of 13, and was not fond of the lack of support he was getting at home. He also had a very antagonistic personality, leading many people to dislike him. He ended up leaving in 1837. Alcohol could’ve also been a part of the reason he left.
