Edmari Hernandez Silen: Painting Analysis
Edmari Hernandez Silen was born in Puerto Rico on October 7th, 1992; however, lived many different places as she was in a military family. Growing up, her parents pushed her to pursue an art career. In 2014 she graduated from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking with a minor in Art History. She studied abroad many places, and classical artworks such as Shakespearean plays, Greek tragedies, and the renaissance and baroque eras influence her art. While currently working on a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art at the University of South Carolina, Silen teaches Drawing 111.
Silen used charcoal or oil paints in her earlier artworks; however, as she has grown as an artist expanded

Although I thought it strange at first to have a painting about coral reefs that only shows one piece of coral, after learning that this painting is supposed to encourage conservation of coral reefs, I really liked it. I liked the color choices she picked and loved the detail of the rocks and water. I thought it was interesting how she applied most of the paint for this work with a mop because of how huge it is and enjoyed hearing about the process of creating this piece.
After researching Silen and her artwork more, I discovered that she is a professional gallery artist and has had numerous exhibitions across Florida. Snorkeing in Puerto Rico inspired her piece Coral en Playa Saltinera and other paintings in her “Sea Floor” series. The baroque era, which emphasizes motion, space, time, a dramatic use of light, and a passionate theatrically and the Renaissance Era, which revived classical themes, inspired some of her earlier

Her main theme, a central idea in a piece of art, in her work is to bring awareness of coral reef destruction. She uses acrylic paint, plastic element and water mixed together, on yupo paper to achieve the desired effect. In order to create depth in her work, Edmari uses overlapping, when one object covers part of a second object. Furthermore, she uses a lot of primary colors, yellow, blue, and red, to depict the coral under the water. Her coral has visual texture, impression of actual texture or simulated texture, that shows the different ridges and craters.
This artist and her work was very interesting to learn about. Her transition from painting figures to doing water and then combining them to doing figures in the water was very neat. Her most recent works about coral conservation was the most exciting to me. I feel that those pieces actually have a cause that she is passionate about and can be used to fight for a cause that she enjoys. I thought the art was very eye opening to the problem that coral reefs in Puerto Rico are facing. I would like to see more work by her and how it will change going

The painting shows the features of Fort George Island. It is a painting that has palm trees, a hazy blue-yellowish sky, a boat with people disembarking which suggests an island where anyone could escape their everyday lives. Thomas Moran vacationed with his wife to Fort George Island, Florida in 1877. This art piece creates a warm inviting effect on the audience through the use of warm analogous colors, atmospheric perspective and attention to detail on the painting. This particular painting makes part of a big collection called "The World Stage: Jamaica". In this collection, he portrays the Jamaican culture through its people. The goal of this project was to draw a connection between classic European painting and Jamaica, which he managed to do turning portraits of that time, in portraits of the people that today live in this island. For example, the painting I chose was inspired by an old painting of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the husband and consort of Queen Victoria. I think that the best way to understand what the artist is trying to convey is by analyzing the painting from two different perspectives.…

I have selected these exploration works for best representing and expressing my theme, whether it be the vulnerability of summer or the confidence of freedom. This is reflected in the position of the model’s form and postions in the photographs and the use of gestural, lineal shapes of the drawn women in my 2D works. The explorations of watercolour painted backgrounds on Potential Direction #1, #2 and #3 is contrasted against the gloomy and smooth, navy blue figure and the white pearl wash over the photo in Potential Direction #10. The brightly coloured and patterned wash over Potential Direction #11 and #12 reflects the opposite side of this, forming the basis of the overall artworks.…

“Painting is a lifeline, combining creativity, solitude, and limitless possibilities. I’m all about experimenting with paint, surfaces, and subject matter. I like to keep it simple, avoiding detail and not giving away the whole story” (Pamela). I love how the painting is full of color and goes so well together. The style of this painting is abstract with simplified and exaggerated aspects. The water and sailboats have all been simplified. The boats that are closer to the front of the painting have been exaggerated more than the others in the distance. There are many horizontal lines within the painting created with the hard, exaggerated brush strokes in the water.…

Howard works in very thick layers. She separates colours and leaves crisp definition between each stroke. Here it seems as though she has used a tool such as a knife or card, and has dragged the paint across the page. She has also picked out undertones such as purples, greens and oranges and has intensified these colours and made them really stand out. She manages to do this without overpowering the reflections and water like look.…

The uttermost unifying piece of this artwork is the color. The use of atmospheric perspective relies on the color palette. It heightens the ephemeral quality of light and nature because it is constantly changing. The blues and purples are subtle and encompass the majority of the canvas. The blues are minutely changed and layered against one another. Dow’s color palette is made up of only complimentary colors that strengthen the contrast and reinforce the inspiring nature of light and form. Greens and reds are prominent in the foreground and appear grid like giving each level of rock…

The bright vivid colors attracted me to this work; I found it interesting how the artist played off of mostly reds and blues and I liked how my attention was immediately drawn to the center of the painting. All of the people seemed to be involved in the miraculous birth of the Jesus. The greatest aesthetic strength of this painting is its use of vivid color, the aesthetic weakness I found was the lack of the artistic use of shadow. I…
