In the essay," What Happiness Is," Eduardo Porter shares quotations from sources to define happiness (459-61). I will focus on Gandhi's quotation " Happiness is when, what you think, what you say and what you do are in Harmony,'' Gandhi. In the world on one else steal happiness from you in this manner, only you can. If you do what you say and say what you think, then all is in alignment and you have opportunity for happiness. When they are out of alignment you have internal conflict and happiness will be hard to achieve. My life was good and I was happy. I had a great husband and had recently brought a house in Sacramento, had a good job and a great circle of family and friends.

All of that changed over the course of few months and I began to lose absolutely everything I had. I hit a major depression phase and couldn't stay focused at work anymore so I left my job too.I went from one therapist to another to figure out how to control my emotions and fears. One of my mentors, burned me a CD with guided meditation. That started to change my life forever. The true contents of happiness are stated in the article “A Formula for Happiness” by Arthur C. Brooks, the president of the American Enterprise Institute. Brooks states that people realize life and view happiness depending on genes, one-time events and basic values: faith, family, community and work. He pays special attention to the last one. According to Brooks, meaningful work and success considered as passion can make people happier. Brooks cites as an example Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words: “Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money;…

Happiness, I believe, isn’t just something that happens or comes. Roko Belic controversially argues in his documentary film Happy that poorer countries like India are easily surpassing the U.S. on a list of the happiest nations in the world. Happy begins with a poverty-stricken rickshaw puller in an Indian slum who claims to be happy, very happy, in fact. Director Belic takes us to various countries, examining different people in various economic situations, and with the help of some “happiness science,” evaluating their level of happiness. Throughout the movie, Director Roko Belic illustrates that it isn’t what we do that makes us happy, but it is the people and the relationships in our lives that brings us happiness and everlasting joy.…

The Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner and Quincy Troupe entails the life story of Christopher Gardner. Like other books that movies are made from, The Pursuit of Happyness movie was very different than the book. In the movie, Gardner starts out in his late twenties; he lives with his wife, Linda, and his son Chris Gardner Jr., who was five-years-old at the beginning of the movie. The book starts out very differently; Gardner is just three-years-old and living in a foster home (Gardner and Troupe 15-16). By the end of the book, Gardner Jr. is barely four-years-old. The major difference between the book and the movie is that Gardner experiences physical, mental, and sexual abuse.…

Achor defines happiness as, “the experience of positive emotions - pleasure combined with deeper feelings of meaning and purpose” (Achor 39). When the definition is put into those terms, I can really understand that I’ve settles for less as my definition of “happiness”. My definition of happiness is almost more accurately a definition of “content”. I am merely satisfied with my life. I, like so many others, have fallen into the trap of believing true happiness will come with success. Based on Achor’s research, this idealism is completely false. His research suggests that happiness causes success. In this section of the book, Achor goes on to say that, “happiness makes us more thoughtful, creative, and…

I read the book Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert. This book was not what I was anticipating. I expected someone to be describing why some people are happier or seem to be happier than others and that was not the case. This book, to me, was more about each person’s perception of happiness is different so no one can really say I’m happier or this made me happier than them. We each experience things differently due to how much it means or doesn’t mean to us. Situations are not always what they seem or how we anticipate to feel in them.…

J.D. Salinger’s world-renowned book The Catcher in the Rye and director Sean Penn’s dramatic feature film Into the Wild both give us a unique perspective of society through a collection of descriptive imagery and riveting plot development. Both materials present us with protagonists Holden Caulfield and Chris McCandless, whom are deeply encompassed by self-introspection and who seem to be on a quest to find true happiness and meaning to their bland, corrupt lives. A recurring theme in both works is the process of discovering one’s true identity, which can only be achieved through a journey of spiritual self-discovery. In doing so, J.D. Salinger and Sean Penn effectively use their protagonists, their journeys and the relationships they build to express one simple statement; happiness is the most important and essential thing in our lives.…

We all have a different definition of happiness, and it seems like it is still unclear what happiness really means. In “the sources of happiness”, by Howard Cutler, he discuss where happiness comes from and how the comparing mind works. As for the second article “happiness and its discontents” by Daniel Haybron, he talks about how being happy is being satisfied. Another observations of his that overlaps with Culter point which is how we always seem to confuse happiness with pleasure. Which makes us question if Satisfaction brings us happiness? Is pleasure considered happiness? And will comparing ourselves to other people people bring us happiness or misery?. It is important to understand that happiness is not just one element. It is something that is built over time and rewarded to those who work for it.…

Thoreau was a man in a natural world, he knew true happiness, he didn’t care about society and class, never felt alone, he believed in an existence far different than we do, John Muir lived a life like Thoreau, and modern society is not capable of living the way he did.…
